Chinese First Language Writing & Speaking Competition

On 23 Oct three NHS students (Zheng Huiqian, He Wenqi & Cheng Chen) represented the school in the Annual Chinese First Language Writing & Speaking Competition.  This was a great opportunity for native Chinese speakers in high school settings to meet and to demonstrate their writing and public speaking ability. Students were given 4 topics to select from and they had 40 minutes to prepare their article and 4 minutes to present.

Zheng Huiqian' topic was to discuss the negative influence of the Internet on young people. Both He Wenqi and Cheng Chen wrote to share their experience for being away from home to study overseas; they explained that this is a long journey full of challenges and excitements.  Three of our students achieved very well with Zheng Huiqian became one of the medallists and He Wenqi's article were quoted and praised by the compere for its rich content and sophisticated vocabulary use.

We are very proud of our girls, well done.

The session included an overview of NHS,  an International Student Program video presentation, followed by a school tour and meeting with international student representatives. VCE Lit Trip to Sydney

This year, Year 11 literature students had the opportunity to fly up to Sydney to see the STC production of ‘Arms and Man’ by George Bernard Shaw at the Opera House. As could be expected the dialogue was very witty and there was a great set and fabulous costumes. On Saturday night the group went to the Belvoir Theatre to see ‘Ivanov’ by Chekhov and students enjoyed a far more intimate and intense performance. The humour and costumes were outrageous and Ivanov’s impoverished circumstances were accentuated by a noisy air-conditioner that continually threatened to break down. (We also enjoyed Martha Babinka’s overview of global markets and currency trends).

On Sunday it was back to the Belvoir Theatre to listen to Eamon Flack, the artistic director at Belvoir and the director of ‘Ivanov’, talk about the production. Overall, it was a great trip and the students thoroughly enjoyed the performances. Martin Ramsay and Carlene Wilson VCE literature teachers
