SSV Coburg District Cross Country Championships 2021

22 of our 4/5/6 students represented Newlands Primary last Wednesday at the SSV Coburg District Cross Country Championships. We are super proud of all the students who gave it their all and pushed to do their best for the school. Their grit, determination, courage and persistence did not go unnoticed,  and each and every students should hold their head high and be proud of what was achieved. Special mention must be provided to Isaac P. who placed 11th, just missing out on the Regional Championships, and to Gabby F. who placed 14th. Well done to you both- a mammoth effort!

F/1

Our F/1 students have been working on developing their object-control skills. Students have participated in both locomotor and non-locomotor movement activities that involved them having to concentrate and control mini-basketballs. Activities have included 'Green Light Red Light', 'Follow the Leader' and ' Basketball Ninja'. We have also been concentrating on identifying actions that keep their bodies safe and healthy whilst exercising such as stretching before physical activity,  as well as strategies for assisting sustained focus whilst learning. Strategies such as deep breathing, the use of music in learning, and moving away from distractions when necessary have been discussed, and are being put into practice.  The F/1's are demonstrating a great level of responsibility for their learning.  Go F/1's!!

2/3 & 4/5/6

Our grade 2/3 and 4/5/6 students finished up their AFL Sporting Schools Australia program last week. Students participated in fun games that allowed them to demonstrate the skills that they had acquired over the four-week unit of learning and how much those skills had improved.  Games included ‘Football Ladders’, ‘Footy Tag’, and ‘Numbers Footy’.  A good time was had by all, and like with all weeks in this program, the students demonstrated enthusiasm, good sportsmanship, and care. Excellent work Newlands!

This week the 2/3 and 4/5/6 cohorts have commenced a basketball skills unit of learning.  For the next three weeks, through fun games and activities, students will concentrate on further developing their object-control skills whilst developing understandings of the five fundamental skills associated with the game;  dribbling, passing, shooting, rebounding and defending.
