Managing change and uncertainty
The past few weeks have been full of change and uncertainty. You should all feel proud of your resilience and strength during this time. During uncertain times routine can be helpful for our mental health. Coronavirus, again, has caused a lot of sudden changes, and for a lot of people our lives have completely changed. Many of the activities or routines we once had are no longer doable. It’s easy to feel like our days are aimless. If you’re struggling with this, it’s okay, you are not alone.
Try to get into a routine that you can follow, it will keep your mind occupied. Routine and structure can help at a time where there’s lots of uncertainty and doing the same activities each day can help create a comfortable, familiar space if you feel anxious. But remember, it’s okay to not do everything on your to do list every day. Listen to your body, check in with yourself and be extra gentle with yourself during this time.
The important thing is if you make a routine but don’t always feel like you can stick to it, or some days you just feel like resting, that’s fine. But if you can, it’s good to try and keep going with things as much as possible. This strange time will pass. Stay safe. Stay positive. Stay strong.
Disability/Chronic Illness & Tertiary Transition
This week we would like to share some great resources for those students who might be living with a disability or chronic illness. Pathways to Tertiary is a free online series with content for both students and their families. The videos are pre-recorded and provide information on how to disclose your disability, seek out supports, and provides advice on negotiating adjustments available to you in your transition to tertiary education.
The series involves conversations with past secondary students and university graduates sharing their experience, and also chats with tertiary staff and health professionals. All presentations have captioning and Auslan Interpreters. The Pathways to Tertiary content hub also gives you access to some great extra resources to help you succeed in your transition.
You can access the hub and all its free content at this link: https://abilitykey.com/pathways-to-tertiary. Once in the hub click ‘Watch Recording’ to check out the pre-recorded sessions.
