Feeling creative?

The Hachette Australia Prize for Young Writers is a developmental award open to Australian secondary school-aged students across Australia.

The prize recognises writing excellence in three categories: Fiction, Creative Nonfiction and Poetry. Entries can include writing for readers of any age.  The Prize is sponsored by Hachette Australia and administered by Express Media, Australia’s peak youth literary organisation.

Shortlisted writers get the opportunity to receive mentorship from an established author. In 2021, the Hachette Australia Prize for Young Writers Mentor is Danielle Binks.

Danielle Binks, 2021 Hachette Australia Prize for Young Writers Mentor, says:

“I have been crediting Express Media with making me a writer for as long as I can remember. It’s my No. 1 answer when school-students ask me how I got started in my writing career, I’ve been citing all the incredible work that Express Media does to find and nurture young, emerging voices. Of which, I was one way back in 2011 when I came runner-up for this very prize. It was one of the first times I’d shared my work openly, and felt like I might be able to keep doing that; working and sharing and growing, thanks to this organisation showing me the entire community that exists and is built around supporting voices such as mine. Now I get to be one of those helpers; a mentor to a new generation of emerging young writers, and I do consider it a highlight of my career; and the most stunning way for it to all come full-circle.”

The prize winner in each category will receive:
