Primary News

Mr Liam Beatty

At the College Assembly last week Mr Newman (Head of College) reminded the boys about the values and ethos of the College and their behavioural expectations whilst enrolled at Marist College Ashgrove. This morning I reiterated this message to the boys, particularly in regards to their uniform and the manner in which they speak to their peers and adults. Information regarding the uniform expectations for all students at the College are outlined by Mr Serone in the Head of Students section of this newsletter.

Primary Jumpers

I am aware that there has been some confusion about the appropriate jumper for students to wear with their sports uniform at school. I hope the information below is able to provide some clarity to all our families.

In the grey uniform, the only additional top the boys can wear is the College grey pullover. On sports uniform days (Fridays for Year 6 and Wednesdays for Year 5), the only additional tops the boys can wear are the navy fleece or the College grey pullover.

Please note that the MCA hoodie and sports jackets are supporters items and, as such, should only be worn to sports training or to games on the weekend.

Communication

A reminder that if you require clarification about uniform expectations or have any questions (no matter how small), please contact Primary Reception on primaryreception@marash.qld.edu.au or 07 3858 4551. You are also very welcome to contact me anytime at beattyl@marash.qld.edu.au

Year 5 Camp

A big thank you to our staff: Michael Connolly, Matthew Jones, Peta Earley, Cath Geraghty, Rachelle Garton, Bas Pelly, Kylie Tippins Lisa Babon, Erin Pownell and John Lambourne who joined our Year 5 students on camp at Tallebudgera. The boys had a fantastic three days and two nights in what, for many of them, was their first-ever camp experience. The excitement of the daytime activities was compounded with an opportunity to witness the Lunar Eclipse through a telescope. More information and photos can be found in Mr Connolly’s section below.

Walkathon

This week is Walkathon week and the Primary continues to lead the fundraising competition with over $11,000 raised. Congratulations to Thomas Lynn (6G) who coloured in the Walkathon Tally as our highest fundraiser for the week. There are still many fundraising cards available at reception for students to collect ahead of the big day on Sunday. More information about how the day will run on Sunday will be communicated to families later this week.

Trivia Tuesday

Our Trivia Tuesday fun continues this week. Boys are asked to submit their answers via email to beattyl@marash.qld.edu.au with a prize to be awarded at the following week’s morning assembly.

Congratulations to last week’s winner Thomas Shaxson (5G) who got the following answers correct:

  • How many boarders do we have in the Primary School? 1
  • Which Teacher is also a Senior Supervisor in Lavalla Boarding House? Mrs Earley

This week’s questions:

  • Who are the two newest Primary staff members?
  • How many handball courts (sets of 4 squares) are there in the Primary Quadrangle.

Answers will be in next week’s newsletter

From the Pastoral Leader – Mr Michael Connolly

What a week it was for our Year 5 boys and staff!

We were blessed with perfect weather and this certainly added to the fun had by all who attended the Tallebudgerra venue. This venue proved to be the perfect spot to take 135 boys to for an action-packed, three-day adventure. Giant swings, high ropes courses, bodyboarding, archery and beach games were just some of the activities our boys got the opportunity to take part in.  Added to this list, of course, was the visit from Star Lab on Wednesday night to witness the lunar eclipse up close on the big screen.

The boys were challenged to step out of their comfort zones on many occasions during the camp. For some, this meant climbing higher than they ever had before on the high ropes course. For others, the challenge was being away from home for two nights and becoming accustomed to sharing a room with six other boys from their cohort.  I can definitely say that the biggest challenge for some was organising their sleeping area and their gear without the help of Mum and Dad!

There were plenty of smiles and laughter during the three days and the boys all got the opportunity to mix with boys from other classes and widen their friendship groups which is a wonderful thing. I hope every boy took something away from the camp and learned a little bit more about not only themselves but of the other boys in their year level.

I am sure you all welcomed home very tired young men on Friday night and the conversations were filled with exciting recounts of the days’ activities.

Thanks to the MCA staff and our parent helpers who came along to ensure the boys were supported and well looked after during the camp.
