Inquiry Centre

Curriculum

What a wonderful first full week back at school it has been! Students in the Inquiry Centre have settled into class routines, embracing new learning opportunities and having lots of fun. After establishing our class expectations in Week 1, students have focused on using their character strengths and showing the school values in their new classes.

In English, we have spent lots of time discussing the habits of great readers. We have learnt about choosing “good fit” books, spotted lots of two letter codes whilst reading and made connections whilst reading stories together. Students have also packed their orange folder with take home books and their reading journals. These books are specifically chosen for students to be able to read independently to you each night. Students should be reading for 15 minutes each night and then recording what was read in their journals. Here are a few great questions to ask your child after reading:

In Maths, we have become pattern experts and used our character strength of creativity to make and draw patterns with different colours, shapes and sizes. We even created our own class pattern books, showcasing all that we learnt about patterns throughout the week! A highlight was exploring number patterns through skip counting and hundreds chart puzzles. Students used their knowledge of place value to find patterns to put hundreds chart puzzles back together!

In Guided Inquiry, students are exploring the theme “Places and Spaces” with a focus on what a community is, who is in our community and what places we might find. It would be great to have a conversation with your child/ren about what community means to your family! We are excited to keep investigating this topic.

Finally, the Inquiry Centre was quite literally buzzing as we ventured into the garden in search of bugs for our Science inquiry. We spent time searching through our beautiful garden for tiny creatures, focusing on making careful observations like scientists. Throughout the term, we will learn about insects, life cycles and animal habitats.

It has been a busy, action-packed first week and we are so proud of the amazing efforts we have seen across the Inquiry Centre!
