Independence Centre

Curriculum

Wow, what an exciting week we have had in the Independence Centre! It was an amazing first full week and it was great to see all of the students settling into their routines.

Last week, it was great to spend Thursday covering our Acceptable Use Agreement, Digital Footprint, balancing life and technology, coding and apps required for school this year. Students will need to bring a set of headphones to use at school for many of the apps we use. If you have any questions about the iPads please feel free to contact your child's classroom teacher.

In Literacy last week, students completed brainstorms that they were then able to use when creating a recount about the events of their time spent over the holidays. In the coming week, we will be further exploring recounts with a focus on adding description using the senses. In Reading, we will be looking at using our ‘Just Right Books’ to set reading goals and collect evidence of our progress towards reaching these goals. We will continue to explore genres throughout this week! What is your favourite genre of book?

In Mathematics last week, it was great to spend some time exploring place value through some engaging maths games. Your child might like to teach you some of the games we played! This week, we will continue to explore place value using some hands-on materials and engaging lessons. We will also start to include problem-solving lessons once a week! These lessons often involve more than one way to solve them and have many answers. During these lessons, we focus on having a growth mindset and using different problem-solving strategies such as, acting it out, drawing a diagram, trial and error, and making a model.

For our Guided Inquiry topic ‘First Contact’, we have begun to explore and look at the communities of Australia’s First Peoples before and after the arrival of European Settlers. We are also beginning to look at some of the artifacts from this time period!

STEM has seen us looking at plants and their life cycles. We are continuing to look at some friends of plants and the different needs that plants have to survive!

Wishing you a wonderful week,

Mr Dix, Miss Gasowski, Mrs McCoy, Miss Molloy, Mr O’Connor and Miss Richardson :)
