Leadership Centre

Curriculum

Congratulations to our 5/6 students on a wonderful first week in the Leadership Centre! Students have settled well into their new class routines following school values and class expectations. Students are enjoying reconnecting with friends and working collaboratively with peers and teachers. We understand that coming back to school for some students is not so easy and may present challenges and some anxiety. Please keep in touch with your child’s teacher if you are concerned about your child’s transition back to school.

On Friday our Year 6s were presented with their Leadership Badges and enjoyed their first session with the leadership groups. Teachers view all Year 6s as leaders of the MPRPS community and we look forward to seeing them flourish and grow in these positions throughout the year.

On Thursday, students participated in ‘Cybersafety Day’. Our young people are faced with many online challenges…. . ‘How long is too long on my device?’ ‘How do I respond to this message?’ ‘How will my friend feel if I share this photo?’ We recognise the importance of educating our students and helping them to make correct decisions in what may be a difficult situation. Students participated in a range of lessons including Balancing Tech and Life Balance, Cyberbullying, What is a Digital Footprint, Digital Tech Etiquette and we finished the day with students signing the Acceptable Use Agreement. Your child may have further questions from the day or want to find out more about a certain topic. Please take time to talk about their takeaways from the Cybersafety day. It is vital to have an open dialogue about how your child is using their digital device.

During Reading sessions, students have been exploring ‘What is a Literature Circle?’. We have been exploring the different roles of the Literature Circles and collaborating with peers to build an understanding of what each role entails. When students work in Literature Circles, they are reading the same text but take on a different role. They then share with their group information depending on what their role is. Have a chat with your child about the different Literature Circle roles.

In Writing, students have been working on their Term 1 learning goals. Students with the guidance of their teacher have set specific goals for Reading, Writing, Maths and a Personal goal which they hope to achieve in Term 1. Goals will be reviewed in 4 weeks and students will show evidence of how they are tracking in their Goals book. Some students have identified goals from testing completed during the week, others have continued goals from last year. Goals will be posted on Seesaw for parents to view.

In Maths, we are learning about Place Value exploring numbers from 5 to 9 digits. Students worked in both whole class and small groups completing set open ended tasks. Yatzee is always a popular game during the Place Value unit! Students also completed Maths Essential Assessment tasks and these results ensure that teachers know where each student is at and know what the next step is for each student.

Student Voice

How can I explain what a Digital Footprint is in my own words......

  • Lilian - "A digital footprint is a unerasable past on the future, or basically a history! If you delete it, it’s still there! It is UNDELETABLE. A bit like in a desert, but no winds to blow away your footprints."
  • Jacob - "A digital footprint is what you have done on a device that stays on the device forever, even if you clear it from your history it is still there."
  •  Pearl - "A digital footprint is something that you have done on the internet and can not be deleted or undone so whatever you have done on an app or social media account can’t be deleted forever."
  • Coby - "A digital footprint is whatever you do online. It also cannot be deleted"

Reminders

  • Hats are to be worn during recess and lunchtimes. Please ensure that your child has a named hat at school.
  • Please ensure that you check your child’s diary and sign it at the end of the week. Students will be including the books that they read in their diary.
  • All students are required to have their own set of headphones at school. Please ensure that your child has their name on theirs.
  • Students are expected to read each night for 20 minutes. This is an important time for them to connect with their text and consolidate the skills and concepts that have been taught at school. More will be said about homework expectations next week.
  • We have some important events coming up on the school calendar:
  • Monday 8th Feb: Senior Swimming Carnival
  • Tuesday 16th Feb: Senior Information Night via Google Meet. **PLEASE NOTE THE CHANGE OF DATE** Google Meet Room code: ycn-cpgw-eqv Link: meet.google.com/ycn-cpgw-eqv
