Tiddalick - Drama toolbox incursion

Tamara Bryan, ELC Teacher

Continuing with the children’s interest in Australian animals, they recently explored the Aboriginal Dreamtime story Tiddalick, the Frog who Caused a Flood. To consolidate this learning, the children had the opportunity to participate in a performance of this story with Drama Toolbox.

This experience was a fabulous way to foster confidence and consolidate learning through combining drama and music. The children also learnt to cooperate and work collaboratively to make Tiddalick laugh and get all the water back that he had drunk from the river.

While acting out the story, the children used physical skills and role playing to move like the animals and respond through movement to traditional music and storytelling of Aboriginal culture.

They also reflected on the story recognising the importance of conserving natural resources and using their imagination and creativity to explore the Australian bush. They interacted verbally and non-verbally to generate ideas to make Tiddalick laugh. Finally, they used drama, movement and storytelling to make meaning and learn that natural resources need to be conserved.
