Cross Country
Last week provided the opportunity for our Cross-Country team to convert their months of hard work into a competitive race at the ISA Selection Carnival. Sydney Equestrian Centre provided a mud bath to challenge our athletes. For some, finishing the race with 2 shoes proved challenging enough. As the host school, we also had the role of student helpers, making for plenty of course-side support for our athletes. After a few late scratchings, St Pius X took a squad of 39 competitors to challenge the best in the ISA, led ably by captain Josh Brown and his experienced Yr 12 cohort.
The U12’s saw us off to a flyer with Ben Fogale being rewarded for months of training with a 5th placed finish and ISA selection. Our large contingent of U13’s took on the 3km course, Harry Arnold also taking out 5th place and a spot on the ISA team. Leo Boyd-Clark finished a commendable 17th, just shy of the top 10 that gain automatic selection for the CIS Carnival and Hamish Mullen finished a creditable 22nd in a big, fast field. In the U14’s Ethan Fajemisin placed 14th, running most of the race with one shoe after losing it on the course. Josh Booth took out 18th position in the standings, rounding out the Junior Division of the Championships.
Our intermediate performers on the 4km course produced some cracking results. Despite losing 3 runners to illness, including last year’s podium-placed Riley Watt, our 15’s were a strong cohort and did not disappoint. Jasper Lindsell cemented our mortgage on 5th position and Aidan McNeilly came from nowhere to place 10th, both joining the ISA team for the CIS Championships. Nate Hayes ran superbly for 12th place and a reserve position on the team, whilst Hamish Tooher scored critical points with his 24th place. After a blitzing run, Jacob Magner took home the Silver Medal in the competitive U16’s race and again progresses to higher representation. Importantly for the team points and in a sea of blue and gold washing over the finish line, our other U16’s athletes all finished in strong places (Kai McAndrews 21st, Ben Woollard 22nd, James Leo 23rd and Ethan Li 26th).
We certainly saved the best till last with our Senior Boys Division. Our U17’s were consistent with Toby Thornton-Bott the pick in 16th, followed by Christian Moore and Cavan Ryan in 24th and 25th respectively. In the final race of the day, the Open (U18’s) Boys, Simon Magner scorched the field to make it back to back wins. Chris Zilifian’s training paid off, jumping 9 places to finish 7th, William Walsh-Penny grabbed his coveted ISA spot with a superb 10th place effort and Josh Brown narrowly missed out on selection in 13th – a fantastic team effort.
With such strong results, silverware was up for grabs. Our Jnr Boys placed 3rd overall, the Intermediates went one better to capture 2nd and the Senior Boys defended last year’s win, taking the shield in style. Overall, our team placed 2nd in a tightly fought contest and whilst narrowly missing the win, this was our best result to date.
Congratulations to all athletes in the manner they prepared and ran at the Carnival. Thanks to our external distance coaches, Matt North and Dom Panozzo, who prepared the boys so professionally at training, and also to Mr Dobb and Mr Brannan who assisted with the team and the host school duties.
We wish our 8 ISA runners the best as they compete at the CIS Championships on Wed 8th June - run well.

Winter Squash
The firsts had a decisive victory at Knox with Thomo Wilkins, Oliver Mullen and Dylan Moore all securing strong wins against their opponents.
Also at Knox, Lachlan Giang and Michael Krizan secured victory for the seconds and Oisin Whooley continues to improve.
I had the pleasure of cheering on the SPX 3 in their home match victory against Briars Squash Club. Liam Tumulty, Oliver Price, and Matthew Yee are really starting to build as a team.
The Year 12 team of SPX 4 had a short break from their studies to travel to Dural and gave a good performance against St Andrews. Well done to Jonah Gonzales, Ethan Griffin, and Ralph Montano.
Year 7’s in Team 5 also played well against Knox, congratulations to Ben Meares and Joshua Wang who played twice to substitute for a sick team member. These two players along with Dominic McLachlan are improving each week.
The draw for the full season is available on:
