Japanese in Grade 9

The Grade 9 Japanese class have been busy recently, creating mini-Japanese themed clay items such as the popular and very well-known Anime character Totoro. This week they have also learnt about one of the major festivals in Japan called “Kodomo no Hi” which translates to Children’s Day.

Children’s Day in Japan is celebrated every year on the 5th of May and is a special day reserved solely for children. Children, with their family, hang out Koinobori which are carp shaped streamers which represent each individual member of the family.

Special Mochi (Japanese rice cakes with Azuki beans) are prepared and served, children make Kabuto, which represent mini Samurai helmets and often play games called Kendama. The Grade 9 Japanese class managed to experience some of these special activities during their lesson.

Student Face Masks (Repeat)

A reminder to all parents/carers that it is compulsory for all students to wear a face mask while in class and indoors (including on buses). This is the current requirement from the Tasmanian Department of Health, and the College is duty bound to adhere to this requirement. The College will provide replacement masks if your child needs a one during the day, however they should be arriving at school with a mask to start the day.

Homework (Repeat)

It was noted last term that not all students were completing their home learning tasks.

Homework is an important part of building self-management and enhancing learning and reinforces concepts taught at School. This promotes and ‘cements’ newly acquired skills, knowledge and understanding.

Time Allocations (maximum)

Grade 7 – 3 x 20 mins per weekday afternoon

Grade 8 – 3 x 30 mins per weekday afternoon

Grade 9 – 3 x 45 mins per weekday afternoon

Grade 10 – 3 x 45 mins per weekday afternoon

NAPLAN (Repeat)

On Wednesday 11 and Thursday 12 May students will sit in a formal setting in the School Auditorium to do their best in four tests: Writing, Reading, Conventions of Language, and Numeracy. A catch-up day will be available for students who are away next week.

Students are required to bring a fully charged laptop and a set of non-bluetooth headphones/earbuds.

Senior Secondary Survey (Repeat)

Parents and Carers of Grade 9 and 10 students should have received an email at the end of Term 1, asking you to partake in a survey. We are currently reviewing our Senior Secondary program offerings, and we would appreciate your input as your children are currently progressing towards Senior Secondary. We aim to provide a program that is engaging, fulfilling and that caters for the needs of our students. If you did not receive this email, please contact Robyn Stromsoe (robyn.stromsoe@scc.tas.edu.au) and we will ensure you get a link to this survey.
