How we express ourselves in Prep

Prep students are just embarking on a new unit of inquiry under the transdisciplinary theme 'How we express ourselves' with the central idea, Creativity can help people explore and communicate their ideas and feelings. Lots of big words and concepts for such little folk! We began the unit with getting students’ responses to the question, "Why do people create things?" and then used a provocation that encouraged them to see if they could create something that showed what they were thinking or feeling. Can you find the following representations – a tree house, a boat, an elevator, a family moving house, a clock, a lighthouse, a castle, a rainbow, a snake, feeling happy?

As well as providing opportunities for students to design and create artworks using different mediums and forms – sculpture, photography, collage, painting, clay, it will also incorporate other areas of The Arts including music, dance and drama.

It will be interesting to observe how the students develop their understanding of creativity and self-expression as the unit progresses.

The SCC Scoop

Our new extension literacy groups in the primary school are thriving! Students are excited and engaged when they enter the library to meet with Mrs Smith every Tuesday. The students have been discussing the importance of words and how they are used including how stories are used to teach lessons, just like Jesus used the parables. Delving into some meaningful vocabulary, they have discussed such words as protagonist, caricature, percussion, investigate and evaluate. The groups explored different genres as well and they focused on fables for a portion of the first term. Students have also been learning about the role of a newspaper, the different things that might be included and the wide variety of roles and responsibilities that go into making a newspaper. Working together, editing each other's work and choosing articles and activities they have worked together to create the first issue of The SCC Scoop!

Please have a look over the student's newspaper - The SCC Scoop Issue #1 - by clicking on the PDF below. Enjoy!

There will also be some hardcopies in each of the classrooms for students to enjoy during quiet reading or for the teachers to read with students.

The Case of the Missing Teacher

The library has been buzzing with detectives solving the case of the missing teacher!

Students in Grades 3 to 6 have been learning all about primary and secondary sources. They used this information to help authorities find the kidnapper. Students examined twelve pieces of evidence to determine who the guilty suspect was. It was lots of fun and great to see students applying their learning in an interesting way.
