The Trades Fit

Year 10 and 11 girls attended The Trades Fit -Young Women and Tech expo which was hosted by the Department of Education and Training. Employment options within the trades and tech industries were showcased, where students were able to participate in interactive displays, enabling them to taste what trade careers are.

The girls were introduced to career pathways in what have been traditionally male dominated industries. Female panelists were able to give a first-hand account of the working life in a trade and the possible opportunities of the various exciting career pathways that are now open to people looking at pursuing a career in the trades.

The students were able to connect with employers, key industry organisations and supporters of gender equality that are assisting girls into trades.

Students were able to hear from trade and tech representatives from fields such as building and construction, electrical engineering, plumbing, automotive, transport, logistics, mining, agriculture, horticulture, aviation, marine, just to name a few.

The girls were able to engage in hands-on activities in many of the various trades on display and came away with a short but real feel for some of the trades of interest.

Student Reflection

Going to this young woman’s in trade expo was a real eye opener. It was a bit of a change, usually you see things like this but rarely involve a women's point of view, especially in the trade community.  Having this was a real confidence booster and showed me a clear view of what I wanted to do in the future. It mad me really excited about what I want to do.

Being in year 11 there has been many struggles trying to get involved because I have always been busy with my studies but having a day off to learn really helped to know what I want to achieve.

In this Expo we had many stations with all sorts of trades, you even got to experience what it is like and get involved in the conversation. They were able to provide clear information on the trades they specialised, and recommend further actions, especially with me. We had special speakers that spoke of their experience and answered our questions.

This whole experience was a good eye opener and was good to go to.
