Plant Production Systems crop trial:

Year 12 APS students visited Beef this week to measure the "Feed on Offer" (FOO). This involved estimating the percentage coverage and density of feed in a 1m quadrat. Students then took a smaller sample back to the classroom to measure and calculate the wet matter available. Once the samples have had all the water removed the students can then repeat the process to calculate the dry matter. They can then compare the two and work out how much feed is available with the highest nutrient availability.

Year 12 ATAR students have been checking the progress and growth of the crop trial. They used randomisation to take a non-bias selection of germinated plants to determine an average leaf stage. Most plants were at a 3-4 leaf stage. The ATAR students were also asked to consider when they would allow cattle in to graze the crop trial based on the leaf stage. Having just finished their Semester 1 exams they decided to have a little fun. Students completed the outing to the crop trial by getting a human pyramid picture for the ATAR wall.
