Round the classes

Reception class : Katie

Over the past two weeks we have been consolidating our knowledge of the single letter sounds. We have been starting to make words, and read sentences. In maths we have been learning about the numbers to 10 and have discovered lots of different ways of making 9. As part of history we have been learning about what a family tree is as well as sharing all the special memories we have of our grandparents. We have also been continuing to monitor our newly planted garden area. This week we have been busy working on the swimming goals we set for ourselves before swimming started.

Year 1/2 classes : Sam and Kelly

This fortnight we have been contributing to our literacy learning where we have been focusing on new sounds, blending sounds to form words, identifying the beginning and ending sounds of words, dictation and learning new words and placing that word into a sentence.

In maths we have been revising place value, continuing with chance and collecting data and ordering numbers from smallest to largest and vice versa.

The children have had a great time at swimming this week. We have been so lucky with the weather. Seeing how the children show such great care, respect and kindness when playing on the public playground has  certainly been rewarding. The students have learnt how to float, use life jackets in the water, understand how to call for help when they are in trouble, use the noodle to save people, dive for objects under water, survival backstroke, sculling, torpedoes and breaststroke.

Year 3/4 class: Stephen and Henry

We have enjoyed a week of swimming at the pool.  We will look at our swimming goals that we set last week to see how we went.  We were grateful for the great weather at the pool.

In maths we have started learning about graphs, reading bar, line and picture graphs to answer questions of them.

We also enjoyed making short persuasive ads on our ipads to convince people to become fit and healthy.

Year 3/4 class: Alex

During Week 9 and 10 students have been creating detailed plans to structure their narratives before writing. They have been focusing on their writing goals and re-reading their work to edit it.

In Maths students have been using a range of addition strategies to solve problems.

In Geography students have been learning and locating the states, territories and capital cities of Australia. They first drew maps showing what they knew already, then created a revised version using reference maps to make changes and add in what was missing. Students have also been investigating the Aboriginal names for country where each capital city is situated and have been learning the Kaurna stories of Tjilbruke and Nganu the Giant, which explain beliefs around the formation of Kaurna land.

Students have been practising their S.M.A.R.T.A.R. goal setting by writing goals about what they wanted to achieve during their swimming lessons.

Year 5/6 class: Sallie

In English we have spent some time looking at past writing pieces and working out what we need to do to make improvements and looking at future writing goals.  We have done some persuasive writing and looking at now honing those skills. Everyone has the reading bug in our class and it is interesting listening to people share why they like the books they have chosen and seeing the different genres students choose to read.

In maths it has been hard to progress to new topics with so many people away but we have been very active with our maths mentals and working on fractions in our text books. We have finally started our geography assignment and our learning intention here is to acknowledge and investigate how Australia is connected to our Asian neighbours.

We have also enjoyed district athletics and Year 5 swimming.

Gardening - Jo

Sustainability has been our focus in gardening this term. Alex's  3/4 class has participated in a sustainability audit race where they had to run around the school and find as well as count the solar panels, yellow/green/blue bins, whirligigs, compost bins, worm farms and 10c  recycling.

We discussed why these things help our school to reduce waste and reduce energy consumption.

We are in the process of installing a new subpod in one of the veggie gardens. This is a worm farm where the worms can freely cruise around the veggie patch and come back to the pod to eat the food scraps and then take the nutrients back out to the veggies. It can also be a seat! Worm farming and composting are great ways to reduce land fill and nourish our gardens. The students participate in feeding both each week.
