Fabulous Foundation

Term 2 Week 2 - Friday 5th May 2022

Welcome to Term 2!

We have hit the ground running this term, all Foundation students are enjoying their swimming program at Waves. Everyday they have eagerly gotten on the bus and enjoyed their lesson.  We are extremely proud of their independence and maturity at how the Foundation students have conducted themselves when getting themselves ready to swim, dressed again, in addition to their amazing manners and behaviours on the bus. All parent’s and families should be very proud!

We’d also like to thank our wonderful parent and family helpers who have kindly volunteered their time to support the swimming program. It is greatly appreciated and we know how much the students enjoy you coming along!  Thankyou again.

What we are learning in weeks 3 & 4:

Reading

We will focus on the comprehension strategy of prediction. Students will predict what a book is going to be about based on the title. They predict why characters act a certain way in the context of a story. Predicting what happens in a story helps them to read to stay focused and engaged. It also helps them stay connected to the text and can reflect on, refine and revise their prediction.

Writing

Over the next two weeks we will be introducing the students to nouns, verbs and adjectivities. This will support the students as they begin to add more details to their writing to make it sound more interesting. We will be going on nouns hunts around our classroom and school and have some fun ways to teach adjectivities to the students. (mmm can you smell the popcorn? How does it taste and feel? But please ssshhhh this is a secret from the students 😊)

Spelling

This term we will continue to introduce new words each week as part of our SMART smelling program. As always, we focus on the sounds of each letter in the word of the week and explore other words with the same sounds. By asking your child what the word of the week is and the sounds of the letters, it will provide a great opportunity for conversation about their learning at school.

Mathematics:

The students will recap on one more, one less using concrete material.  We will also introduce them to ordinal number such as 1st, 2nd 3rd and so on as well as introducing and number lines to the students.

Inquiry:

Our Inquiry unit this term is ‘Our community.” We will look into where we live and they type of houses we live in compared to other countries. We will also explore how schools have changed over the years (olden days to now), what schools look like in other countries, as well as what resources are available to us in our community (emergency services, facilities etc). We are in the process of trying to organise some incursions for this inquiry unit.  Once we have confirmation we will let you know!

Leader in Me:

We will complete new Personal and Academic WIGS (Widely important goals). Students will be asked to reflect on their term 1 WIGS.  Did they reach their goal?  We’ll talk about why or why not.  They will then decide themselves if they will continue to keep the same goal again or if they achieved their goal they will be able to create a new WIG to work toward.

Take home readers and blue pouches

There was a lot of excitement as preps were given readers tit ae home.  Every morning they are independently changing their readers and giving their teachers any notices.

Please check these pouches nightly as this is how we send home school notices and communication.

We understand life is busy but please try to have your child read their reader each night. They really enjoying coming in each morning and swapping their reader over. (We have enclosed a laminated book mark which prompts you to ask questions at the end of the story to support their comprehension.)
