BUILDING CHARACTER AND RESILIENCE

COURAGE

"Each time we face our fear, we gain strength, courage, and confidence in the doing."

- Theodore Roosevelt

Courage and fortitude mean making a choice to confront hardship or risk physical danger for the sake of a greater good (often love for another person).  Courage also means that we have the emotional and character strength to withstand extended hardship or pain.  It is a virtue developed by mindfully tackling challenges, confronting unhealthy mindsets, situations and even people in our lives, as well as accepting the reality we live in.

Courage isn't only for superheros; we encounter situations daily that require our courage - and it can take many forms.  It takes bravery to challenge and question prejudices, as well as to call out unacceptable behaviour.  It also takes empathetic and moral courage to move away from the crowd, make your own decisions and stand up during unjust situations.

We must learn, practice and promote courage in those around us to build up a resilient and connected community.  Although highlighted during emergencies, everyday courage is what helps us to grow.

Is there something you've been putting off that can be courageous and face today?
