Reading

Students will continue to select 5 ‘Just Right’ books, including at least one non-fiction text, on a weekly basis and read these daily at school as well as at home with you. Your praise and encouragement as your child’s reading develops, is invaluable. Read nightly if possible and ask them what their reading goal is and what they need to practise to become an even better reader.

This term it is expected that students will;

Grade 1

  • Spend an extended amount of time reading authentic texts on a daily basis and participate in opportunities to talk about literature, act upon feedback and practise their goal.
  • When reading, use knowledge of the relationships between sounds and letters and high frequency words to support meaning.
  • Make predictions using the title and illustrations and at points in the text before moving on.

Grade 2:

  • Spend an extended amount of time reading authentic texts on a daily basis and participate in opportunities to talk about literature, act upon feedback and practise their goal.
  • Recognise most letter- sound matches and understand that a sound can be represented by various letter combinations.
  • Make and confirm predictions using prior and learned knowledge and adjust predictions based on clues as you read.
