Year 10 Italian

Masterchef Italia

Last week the Year 10 Italian - Masterchef Italia had its first lesson for the year. This is a new course and aims to expose students to functional and real-life Italian, what is also known as authentic learning. In this case it was the vocabulary, grammar and language structures related to preparing, consuming and reviewing food. Students will be equipped with the tools required to deconstruct language, not only to be able to gain an understanding, but to be able to react and respond, in a real sense, to what they are learning. Masterchef Italia's real context is Italian food embedded in the tradition, history and culture. Students will read recipes, discuss food preparation, follow and give instructions, research the food origins, then discuss and review the outcome...all in Italian. Students are given a full immersion experience and is the next best thing to being in Italia itself...well, almost!

In the first lesson, students were thrown straight in. They were given the recipe for bruschetta and were asked to deconstruct it. They started with what they did understand and worked on figuring out what they didn't, building on the overall understanding of what was being asked of them. Students made lists of ingredients, utensils and instructions, then they prepared the dish. The results were delicious, but more importantly the process was confidence building.

Auguri ragazze, un ottimo lavoro!
