Principal's Report

From the Principal

This time of year offers our students a range of challenging and engaging activities both inside and outside of the classrooms. Our Year 11 students are currently on camp, skiing in the snowfields of Victoria, undertaking work experience placements or involved in our Job-Skill training course. Our Year 12 students are working very hard to complete their final major assessment task over the remaining weeks of term and then turn their sights on our exam-revision period in term 4.

Next week we are presenting an information session for students and parents as we look to resume our NASA Space Camp in 2023, offering an amazing experience for the students fortunate enough to be involved.

The following week will see a brilliant set of performances in our annual “The Show Must Go On”  - our student talent showcase with both daytime and evening performances.

In three weeks, our Year 8 cohort will be involved in their camp experience in South Gippsland.

As we move towards the end of Term 3, the above-mention events (and more) offer a great showcase of student leadership, participation, excellence and adventure that reflect the elements that make our College a wonderful place to teach, learn and grow.

To our Year 12 students and their families, in particular, I am aware of the challenges you are facing as we enter the second half of this term before the important exam-preparation that commences in term 4. My best wishes are extended to you, along with my hopes that you can maintain a healthy balance in your studies in this busy time. Whilst it may not seem possible, I would encourage all our Year 12 students to ensure that they are able to think carefully about what a healthy and balanced lifestyle may look like over this period of time. Yes, there will be a significant amount of time devoted to study and revision – as there should be at this stage of the year. However, I would further encourage you to ensure that you are able to focus on exercise, diet and getting enough sleep.

Experience leads me to observe that those who cope best with these significant challenges are usually those who have found a reasonable balance in their busy schedules.

Safety on our roads

Can I take this opportunity to re-focus on an important factor related to daily school life at our College.

With the poor weather we have endured recently and the more hazardous conditions that this has caused, we have received several alarming reports recently on students making poor and potentially dangerous choices when crossing George Street and surrounding streets at the end of the school day.

In a similar fashion, a few parents when dropping off in the morning or picking up in the afternoon, are at times displaying poor judgement when parking, pulling out of or into traffic at these busy times of the school day.

Clearly, this situation has the potential to endanger our students and the families of our school community.

We will continue to keep working with our students to ensure that they are aware of their responsibilities when crossing roads and the need to make sensible and safe decisions in such circumstances. We further rely on the continued support from our parents to discuss such matters with their children and to be equally as vigilant and respectful of others when travelling to and from the College.

The safety of our students is always our primary concern.

2022 Parent/Caregiver/Guardian Opinion Survey

Our school is conducting a survey to find out what parents/caregivers/guardians think of our school. The Parent/Caregiver/Guardian Opinion Survey is an annual survey offered by the Department of Education and Training that is designed to assist schools in gaining an understanding of families’ perceptions of school climate, student behavior, and student engagement. We encourage all families to participate in this survey. Our school will use the survey results to help inform and direct future school planning and improvement strategies.

A random sample of approximately 30 per cent of parents/caregivers/guardians have been selected to participate in this year’s survey, which has been sent via email.

The Parent/Caregiver/Guardian Opinion Survey will be conducted from Monday 15th August to Friday 16th September.

The survey will be conducted online, only takes 20 minutes to complete, and can be accessed at any convenient time within the fieldwork period on desktop computers, laptops, tablets or smartphones. The online survey will be available in a range of languages other than English. These include Arabic, Vietnamese, Simplified Chinese, Chin (Hakha), Hindi, Japanese, Somali, Turkish, Punjabi and Greek.

The survey results will be reported back to our school at the end of September. This information is then published in the College’s Annual Report to the Schools Community, which is published on the EDSC website and updated at the end of Term 1 every year.

If you have any further queries regarding this survey, please contact Reception.
