Resource Centre

It has been another off the shelf month for the Resource Centre Team, with excitement about the consistent flow of young people attending and using the Resource Centre for reading, collaborating ideas, exercising their creativity or simply enjoying the calming atmosphere of the venue.

People dived into R U Okay Day? To encourage visible thinking, people shared energising messages including empowerment and reveling in the beauty that exists in our world. The Positivity Wall was alive with insightful messages.

An initiative to promote voice and agency in our student community enabled the passionate participants of the Reading Program to experience the Book Speed Dating Event. Collaborating in their teams and reviewing books directly from the distributors, lively and insightful conversations took place between young people about their perspectives of the texts. They shared recommendations of books to purchase, even fervently requesting a book to be reserved for loan once the text has been purchased and processed.

The Reading Program continues to capture the enthusiasm of the Year 7 and 8 Community. Among the critical thinking skills recently referred to was visualisation. Based on this skill, the richness of  picture book illustrations was the focus of a recent lesson. Imaginations of visualising images from a visual fiction book displayed the diverse intelligences of members of the year 8 group. Their power of perception through black and white drawings, accompanied with a thoughtful description about their understanding of the plot was insightful.

Experiencing history was another unexpected event shared with students. A session in the Resource Centre subsequently took place on the morning after the passing of the incredible Queen Elizabeth II. The students’ perspectives and understanding of the significance of Queen Eilzabeth to empower women was inspiring. This involved complex conversations about the possibility of Australia becoming a republic following the passing of Her Majesty and their opinions about her legacy. These discussions are evidence that we cannot neglect the minds and opinions of young people, as the world needs thinkers and leaders more than ever, and their ideas and opinions pave the way for the future.

With the end of the term approaching, it is with a heavy heart that a regular member of the Resource Centre Team is about to complete her education at Marian College. We would like to express our gratitude for Nikita Kolbl’s presence and assistance. As part of Nikita's VCAL Program, she has assisted with the administrative duties in the Resource Centre. It has been fantastic to observe Nikita’s personal and vocational skills development while she enthusiastically participated as a member of the team. The Resource Centre will have a vacant seat in 2023,  without Nikita taking up her regular place by sitting on the throne at lunchtime, reading the time away.

The Resource Centre Team would like to acknowledge and thank the Marian College Leadership Team, our colleagues, young people and families for their flexibility and support throughout Term Three.
