Year 9 Maths Games - Federation University

Last Wednesday I was one of eight students in year 9 who were lucky enough to get to go to a Maths Games Day at Federation University, in Churchill.  We arrived bright and early and after splitting into two teams, we were faced with the first challenge; Maths Sudoku. By the time recess came, Team 2 had managed to complete the most out of everybody and were in the lead!

Grabbing our snacks, we wandered around the seemingly never-ending corridors, finding the canteen, nearly interrupting a science class and admiring the beautiful lake from warmth of inside the uni.

The second challenge was forty-five minutes to solve twenty problems as a group. The difference in the winners was down to only a few points when we went to lunch.

Bolstered by hot chips from the canteen, everybody was ready for the final challenge, which was a range of maths games finishing off with a nail-biting relay. Both teams did great and when the final results came in Mary MacKillop Team 2 had come third! We went up to collect our prize; a ruler and a voucher for 25 dollars.

A big thanks to Ms. Collins, Mr. Sheahan and everybody else who made sure we had an awesome day.

Congratulations to Year 11's Penny Clarke (MAC2) who as the youngest member of the Leongatha Historical Society has curated her first exhibition with the theme Historical Fashion, which opened at the Daffodil Festival last weekend and was enjoyed by many locals and visitors alike. The Society is open on Thursday and Friday afternoons for anyone who hasn't yet visited and welcomes new members of any age. Penny has plans to major in History at University after she completes her VCE studies and dreams of curating exhibitions in large European museums in the future. She's off to a good start!
