Monash Gallery of Art and Jells Park

On Wednesday 24 August, the Year 10 elective, Photography and Film, went on an excursion to the Monash Gallery of Art (MGA) and Jells Park.

At the MGA, students were spoken to by Jess, the Educational Officer about MGA’s current exhibition, Return to Nature. The information gained by the talk, students will incorporate into the analysis of an artwork they selected from the exhibition.

After the talk, students took analogue black and white photographs using the College’s SLR cameras of the grounds of the MGA. The theme of the photoshoot was ‘nature’ which coincided with the theme of the exhibition. We then travelled to Jells Park, to take more photographs of the surrounding area. Despite the rain cutting our excursion short, the students believe they took some amazing photos. We will develop the films next term.

Below is our students sharing their experience of the excursion:

As this was my first time experiencing a gallery that specifically centred about photography, I found it very interesting and enlightening. The way the artworks were displayed throughout the exhibition told a story about the evolution of the Australian landscape, as well as, the way photography has advanced throughout the years.

Julie Hong

Our theme for the excursion was 'return to nature'. I really enjoyed our education tour around the Monash Gallery of Art as well as how we were able to freely move around photographing the nature around us. Although our trip was cut short due to the rain, I enjoyed learning how to use a camera and am excited to see how our photos will turn out.

What I liked was the way that the excursion was separated into two parts, the gallery tour and then taking photos. I liked how we were able to view professional works before being given the chance to try taking our own photos, taking inspiration from the artworks in the gallery.

Year 10 Photography and Film

On Wednesday 24th of August, the Year 10 Photography and Film elective class, went on an excursion to the Monash Gallery of Art (MGA) and to Jells Park.

At the MGA, students were spoken to by the Educational Officer about their current exhibition, Return to Nature. Students engaged with the Educational Officer and asked insightful questions. This information was helpful, as students selected one artwork to analyse, which will become part of their assessment. After the talk, students had the opportunity to take manual black and white photographs using the College’s SLR camera of the surrounding gardens which included a pond, plants, the architecturally designed building and sculptures.

We travelled to Jells Park to take more black and white photographs of the beautiful surroundings- the lake, local birds and plants.

The perfect sunny weather provided the ideal opportunity to capture their images, which will then be developed and printed in the dark room. This was a valuable excursion for the Year 10s to experience what it was like before the digital age when photographers captured their images manually.

Below is feedback from some of the students:

“The best part of today was the many photographic opportunities, they were all very different and we could take many types of images.”

Safia Coleman

“What I liked about the excursion was taking photos and learning information about the Royal Botanic Garden’s trees from the tour leader on the Explorer Bus tour. The most interesting part was taking close up photos of flowers as this interested me.”

Jesela Baxter

“This experience is one that I will never forget. The beautiful plants and scenery provided unique photographic opportunities and I especially enjoyed the bus tour around the gardens.”

Tara Mai

“I loved the relaxing and insightful tour around the Melbourne Royal Botanic Gardens. The plants, scenery and animals made the day an enjoyable way to take our photos.”

Year 10 Photography and Film - Royal Botanic Gardens Victoria Excursion

On the 23rd of March the Year 10s made a trip to the Royal Botanic Gardens to capture the beautiful flora. It was the first time our year 10s have experienced manual black and white photography. The purpose of which was to further develop their understanding of photographic Elements and Principles. The perfect sunny weather provided the ideal opportunity to capture their images, which will then be developed and printed in the dark room. This was a valuable excursion for the Year 10s to experience what it was like before the digital age when photographers captured their images manually.

YEAR 11 VISUAL COMMUNICATION DESIGN

Drawing as a means of communication: Final Presentations

Please enjoy the wonderful work completed by the talented Year 11 VCD students from Semester One. The students used observational drawing as a means to communicate ideas and concepts to an audience. The students used creative, critical and reflective thinking and their understanding of the aesthetics, appearance and function of objects to design their own layout using a collage of objects of their choice. They investigated ways of representing form and surface textures by applying different materials and media in their Final Presentations.

VISUAL COMMUNICATION DESIGN

Year 10 Architecture

In Semester 1, the talented Year 10 Visual Communication Design students studied Architecture in the field of Environmental Design.  The students were able to make their own choice of architectural structure to design. Cafes, townhouses, family homes, and restaurants were some of their choices. The students followed a Brief, researched existing architecture to inspire them, then generated, developed and refined their own concepts using the design process. The students then completed scale architectural floor plans and elevations and completed these designs as 3D digital models using the software ‘SketchUp’.
