SACs

Students and parents are reminded that attendance and completion of SACs in a timely manner is very important for a smooth completion of all Unit 4 coursework by the end of Trerm 3.

Students who are sick on the day of a SAC must obtain a medical certificate and bring it to Ms Pickard on the first day they return to school. The make up SAC will be rescheduled into the first available time slot.

Be aware make up SACs are now completed after school on a Tuesday under the supervision of Ms Powell, Ms Auty or Ms Pickard. This time has been created as a priority to support students to complete all SACs before the end of term.

GAT information

The GAT will be held on Wednesday 7th September at the Springvale Town Hall.  Students will be provided with detailed information closer to the date. Full school uniform is required.

Trial/Practice Exams

All students studying Units 3 and 4 will be completing Practice Exams during the week beginning Monday 26th September, the second week of the school holidays. Practice Exams will be held onsite at Killester. The exam timetable will be released shortly.

Senior Programs Leader

Hi! My name is Mina Nguyen and as a year 11 student, I was able to participate in the Access Monash Program and have a shadowing day at Monash University.

The Access Monash Program is a fantastic program that gives students the opportunity to get a clearer understanding of the pathway they want to take after high school and gives a deeper insight into all the activities and courses offered at Monash University. I was luckily able to shadow my friend’s mentor, in a group, as her course was related to the studies I wanted to pursue in the near future. We were able to visit on a day when our mentor had a molecular biology lecture, giving us a chance to experience what it would be like to sit through an hour-long lecture. Although I had little understanding of the content being covered during the lecture, I still enjoyed the experience as the atmosphere was comfortable and the class felt welcoming!

After the lecture, we were provided with a more in-depth tour of the buildings, allowing us to familiarise ourselves with the campus. Our mentor provided us with lots of help and tips when entering university, such as to take advantage of all the activities and clubs offered and how to smoothly transition into uni life. I’m glad to have had an opportunity to attend this shadowing day as I now have a better idea of what to expect when it eventually comes the time for me to enter! I encourage all students to participate in this program, regardless of whether you have a career pathway chosen or not, as you’ll be provided constant support and guidance from your mentor to help you choose a career and course that you really want!

Mina Nguyen  Year 11

The Monash mentoring program is an amazing opportunity for high school students. Mentees are able to receive individual support from an experienced mentor. The program helps students in preparation for their future studies and career. As part of the program, my friends and I were given the opportunity to shadow a university student for a day, following them around campus and gaining a first-hand insight into university life. We were able to sit in on a molecular biology lecture, which was really insightful and interesting as we were able to see how university students learn on a daily basis. Our mentor then gave us a detailed tour around campus and introduced us to the different facilities and areas that Monash has to offer. We also had an opportunity to ask our mentor about her life as a university student and really got an in-depth view of the differences between high school and university. Overall, this was an amazing experience that helped my friends and me in familiarising ourselves with the university environment, while also assisting in making the transition between high school and tertiary education seem less daunting. I highly encourage year 11 and 12 students to get involved with this program and enrich their knowledge of university life!

Mary Nguyen

It was a really insightful and fun day. Starting off with getting the feel of getting onto campus in the morning. The Monash Clayton Campus was incredibly large and it was definitely easy to get lost. After meeting up with my mentor and her friends, she brought my friends and I to a molecular biology lecture, with a ton of information that I’d never even heard of in my own biology classes. After the hour-long lecture, my mentor took us on a little tour. We covered the biomed, chemistry and science buildings as those were the courses we were most interested in, while also answering questions we had about uni life like how to get into the career path we’d want and studying abroad even. We also took a trip to one of the many libraries and got to see where people ate and took breaks after or before lectures and lab work, including a standout building with lots of study spaces and tons of stairs. It was a really cool experience, seeing what uni students do on a normal day and I have a better understanding and appreciation for life after high school and it's something I’m looking forward to exploring in the near future. :)
