Alpine School for Student Leadership
Currently, we have six, Year 9 students representing Scoresby Secondary College at the School for Student Leadership at the Alpine School Campus in Dinner Plain. This program provides experiential education that supports the personal growth, aspirations and transformation of all students as global citizens.
The curriculum focuses on personal development and team learning projects sourced from students' home regions.
One of our students, has shared with us some of the key highlights in their first month at the Alpine School Campus.
- The first few weeks at the campus was a bit rough. Being put into an entirely new and different environment very far away from home has been hard, however we have got through it and been having lots of fun.
- We have spent most of our time meeting new people and making new friends, playing UNO, table tennis and singing songs.
- A highlight has been the amazing food and the three chocolate cakes we have been lucky to have due to celebrating birthdays.
- There is so much snow here at Alpine. At some parts, the snow can reach up to your knees, it’s crazy!
- So far, it’s been such an amazing and worth-while experience.

We look forward to hearing another update from the students in the coming weeks, and learning more about their Community Learning Project.
Women in Engineering – SCHOTT MINIFAB Excursion
On Friday 22 July, a group of students from Years 8 - 10 were invited to SCHOTT MINIFAB to celebrate International Women in Engineering Day.
At the beginning of our visit, the engineers at SCHOTT MINIFAB gave us an insight into what they actually do on a day-to-day basis. We found it really fascinating to hear about how they became engineers, learning about all their different pathways into their jobs.
We really enjoyed the experiments that they allowed us to participate in. We were able to try our skills in design by creating a plan to code a robot to pick up lollies. We had an opportunity to learn from mistakes and modify our plans after watching how the robot worked.
The staff took us on a really interesting tour of the factory, where we got to see all the different projects that they were working on. The hair nets ruined our hair! But it was worth it.
A big thank you to Mr Youssef and Ms Shirer who accompanied us on the excursion.

Junior School Humanities
Junior School students are excited to begin their study of History in Humanities this term!
At Year 7, we are studying Ancient Civilisations. beginning with a study of Ancient Indigenous Australia. We will soon begin exploring Ancient Greece and finish with Ancient China.
“We are learning about Ancient Indigenous Australia in Humanities this term. I am enjoying the information and stories/Dreamtime stories as it’s really interesting. It is just so cool to learn about Australia’s history and the people before us who have been here for thousands of years”
Ava Byrne - Year 7
Students in Year 8 commenced the term with a unit on Medieval Europe which leads into a unit that explores the causes, spread and impacts of the Black Death. This is very relevant for the students given what they have all experienced with Covid19 in the past two years.
A unit on the Renaissance will follow soon after.
Year 9 students have been exploring the Industrial Revolution and its impacts on society. The unit has a particular focus on the experiences of child labourers during the Industrial Revolution. They will soon begin their unit on World War 1, with a focus on Australia’s involvement in the war.
“In Year 9 term 3 Humanities we are learning about the Industrial Revolution. We are focusing on the living and working conditions of the children. I really enjoyed this topic because I had no knowledge of this part of our history”
