Principal's Report

Welcome to our mid-term edition of our newsletter

I would to take this opportunity to thank parents, carers, student and other members of our community for your support and involvement during the first half of this term. Although, like many community groups and businesses, we have had our share of illness and absence, we are delighted with how students have continued to engage in their learning.

I would like to acknowledge the work of our staff who have remained a power of strength despite the fatigue many have experienced following COVID and other viruses. They have provided the much needed continuity of teaching and learning, wellbeing supports and motivation that our young people need at this time.

2022 Parent/Caregiver/Guardian Opinion Survey

Invitations to the 2022 Parent/Caregiver/Guardian Opinion Survey (previously known as the Parent Opinion Survey) have been emailed out. Each year the school conducts an opinion survey amongst a sample of our learning community. This year, a sample of approximately 30 per cent of parents/caregivers/guardians have been randomly selected and invited to participate. Results will be used to inform and direct our future school planning and improvement. The survey will be conducted online and should only take 20 minutes to complete.

A Day of Learning at Scoresby Secondary College

The first of our Grade 5 students ‘Days of Learning’ took place last Thursday. It was wonderful to see primary students back on site and engaged in lessons with the support of our own student mentors. Thanks to Ms Emily Phibbs Head of Junior School for organising an excellent program together with the support of Mr Ayman Youssef and Mr Mark Corrie our Assistant Principals, teachers Ms Amber Ferrero, Mr John Healy, Ms Corrine Toon and our education support staff Mrs Carol Perryman and Mrs Michele Rogers and  Mrs Lee Smith.

Here is some feedback from one of the schools who attended on the day:

“The kids from Scoresby Primary School had a terrific day today at Scoresby Secondary College, and thoroughly enjoyed the Day of learning, and the engaging activities you had on offer for them. My teachers were raving about how well organised the day was, and how engaged the kids were.  They were also impressed by the variety of activities on offer.”

College Captains visit to Parliament House

Our Captains Aimee Bugeja and Sam Dhillon were invited to join local MPs Kim Wells and Nick Wakeling at Parliament House for the Knox School Captains tour last week. We are exceptionally proud of how well they represented our college as shown in the picture below.

Student Voice and Agency

Knox City Council invited a group of Scoresby Secondary College students to be part of a consultative group with other secondary school representatives as part of their Empowering Communities Project. The project draws on some of the findings from the Knox Police Symposium to reduce crime in Knox. Thanks to our Student Voice, Agency and Leadership Leader Mr Patrick Dempsey for preparing and our students. Well done to Tom Bleakney, Angie Norton, Storm Pascua and Hunter Russell for being such great ambassadors for our college.

Subject and Course Selections

The last few weeks have been very busy for all members of the college following course information for students entering Years 9-12 for 2023. Work is currently being carried out on finalising and checking student selections as these forms the basis of the subjects run and the 2023 timetable.

Next week Interviews will commence for the following groups of students entering Years 11 and 12 in 2023:

  • Students who have selected the VCE Vocational Major pathway. These interviews will be with Mrs Major and Ms Haines and will be conducted prior to approval to enter this program Note: Places are limited
  • Students who have subject clashes when the blocks formed.  In these instances students will have a meeting with Mr Corrie.

Thank you to all parents and carers who attended the subject selection evenings and supported the return of the selection forms and subject contributions. Your commitment is important and much appreciated.

Values Recognition

In addition to the positive Compass Posts, we have added a new acknowledgement for students who have demonstrated or modelled one or more of our college values.

Scoresby Secondary College’s values underpin our purpose to provide a safe, supportive and challenging learning environment that focusses on nurturing the whole person in order to develop active and self-aware contributors to our global community.
