Senior School Report

Term 3 is flying by with six weeks almost completed. Senior students, especially those in Year 12 and/or those completing a Unit 4 study have been undertaking a number of S.A.C.s (School Assessed Coursework) in each subject.

These students, in particular, must ensure they concentrate in all classes, utilise any study periods effectively, seek teacher assistance when required and complete all of the required tasks both in class and at home. Knox Government Secondary Schools VCE Revision Program

The Knox secondary government schools are proud to offer an extensive Year 12 VCE Revision Program for all students enrolled in VCE Units 3 and 4 studies. This program will be conducted online between Monday September 19 and Friday September 23 (during the term break). VCE revision programs of this quality are expensive, but this fantastic opportunity for our students is at no cost to parents. All students completing scored VCE Units 3 and 4 studies are expected to participate.

The program will include online lectures by experienced presenters for many of the studies our school offers, and access to additional online sessions for English, EAL and Maths.

Students will receive excellent resources in the form of information packs prepared by each of the presenters. Students will be informed of the program schedule and further information will be provided leading up to the program. Please see attached flyer.

GAT - General Achievement Test

The GAT will be held on Wednesday 7 September. This year the GAT is divided into two sections. All students completing one or more VCE Unit 3/4 subject (including scored VCE VET students) will be expected to complete the GAT (both Section A & B).

Senior VCAL and Unscored VCE students are expected to undertake Section A.

Section A: Literacy (Reading & Writing) and Numeracy commencing at 9.30am until 11.45am.

Section B: General Knowledge & Skills commencing at 1.15pm until 3.00pm.

During the break (after Section A has finished) Senior VCAL and unscored VCE students will be permitted to leave. Unit 3/4 students will remain at school in the Senior Hub.

There will be an extended home group meeting on Thursday 25 August to provide information to students about the GAT. A Parent Information Brochure has been distributed via Compass.

Year 12 Valedictory Dinner

Valedictory means serving as a formal farewell to students and in some cases families from Scoresby Secondary School. A special and meaningful event to celebrate the end of the secondary educational journey for the year 12 cohort of 2022.

If you haven’t already done so please organise your tables for this event as soon as possible. Numbers are excellent and I am sure it will be a wonderful evening. Bookings can be made through Trybooking.

Course Selection 2023

All course selection sheets for 2023 should be returned by the time this newsletter is published.

Head Start Programs will be held in Term 4 for students moving onto Year 11, and Year 12 in 2023.

Year 10 Road Safety

A frightening fact is that young, solo drivers have a higher chance of being involved in a fatal accident than any other group of drivers. Our Year 10 students recently participated in a Road Smart session. This interactive classroom session helps prepare beginner drivers for solo driving, by providing them with the skills and knowledge that they need to hit the road safely.

‘During this presentation, I learnt that no one is perfectly safe on the roads. Statistics show that people who are on red P-plates are most at risk on Victorian roads compared to learner drivers, people on green P-plates, and even experienced drivers. There are safety precautions to help prevent accidents and fatalities from happening by following the 'safety wheel'. It consists of safer speeds, safer vehicles, safer roads and safer people. By following these, we can further prevent future accidents on the road. Overall, this presentation helped to make me better informed by teaching how to be more responsible when driving.’

Edutech Excursion

"I was one of a group of students who had an opportunity to visit the Edutech expo at the Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre, on Thursday 11 August with Mr Youssef, Zach Bisset, Harrison Voysey, and Harrison Matthews. This event was overall an enjoyable experience for all of us. The displays that we took a look at were primarily about new and emerging technologies, improvements to already existing technologies, and educating people about technology.

Some of the displays included new laser cutting technologies, 3D printing devices for materials such as plastic, resin, and metal, controllable robots made out of Lego, various virtual reality programs, educational programs on Minecraft about cyber security, flying drones, cutting metal using water/steam, and even a couple of robo-dogs that were walking around the many other displays. There were also some souvenirs such as pens, cups, and examples of what some of the technologies on display could create, as well as the opportunity to enter prize pools to try and win new things for the school.

A fun experience for sure, and I would recommend it for anyone interested in new and emerging technologies, or just want to see some cool and interesting things."
