Mid-autumn Festival

The mid-autumn festival is celebrated in China every year in September (spring for Australia). The Mid-Autumn festival, also called the moon or moon cake festival, celebrates successful rice and fruit harvests. It is celebrated by gathering outside and meeting with friends and families, eating moon cakes and just watching the moon.

This year at MGSC we celebrated Mid-Autumn Festival by running a moon-cake making workshop.

On Thursday 8 September some Multicultural Club volunteers and participants went to room 16. The volunteers had set up all the stations, then we let the participants in!

Volunteers demonstrated how to make the moon cakes. They were about 5cm wide, made up of about 25 grams of snow skin and 25 grams of filling. The first step was to put some gloves on and sprinkle some flour onto our gloves and rub it in! Next we grabbed some of the snow skin that Yinan Zhang and Ms Chang’s mum had pre-prepared. We flattened this out on our palms and then grabbed one fillings. There was red bean paste, purple potato paste or a bit of oreo and cream cheese for filling that participants could choose from. We put the inside onto our skins then we wrapped the skin around the paste and made sure it was all covered. Then we rolled our moon cake into the flour. After that we moved onto the stamping station. There were moulds to stamp zodiac animals, flowers and some cartoon characters! Participants chose a mould and got help from one of the teachers to put the mould into the stamper. Next we added some flour into the mould so the moon cake wouldn't stick.

It was so beautiful and a great experience. Thank you for all the volunteers to who helped prepare and run the workshop. Special thanks to the teachers who also ensure this workshop ran well: Ms Chang, Yinan Zhang and Ms Fang.
