Term 3 Author visit – David Lawrence

We were delighted to welcome David Lawrence to Frankston High School on Friday 19 August to present to Years 7 and 8 students.  It was a long time coming: we first booked David to visit in 2020, only to have his visit rescheduled multiple times due to COVID-19.  The students were entertained by David’s stories about how he accidentally became an author and the sports people he has collaborated with.  David was really impressed with the questions he was asked by students, and overwhelmed by the enthusiastic reception at his lunchtime meet and greet.

David’s books, including Anna Flowers, Fox Swift and Maxi the Lifeguard, have sporting themes and use humour to tackle issues such as bullying and racism in schools.  He is currently working on a new fantasy series out next year.

I thought David Lawrence’s visit was impeccable. Getting a glimpse into the life of a writer and entertainer was a very rare opportunity. It is lucky that we, as students of Frankston High School, have gotten the chances we have. Learning of the stories behind his works was truly fascinating.  David Lawrence showed us that what you dream of becoming, and even what you once did, does not have to shape who you are. Even though he wanted to be a football star, he became a comedy writer, however he did more with his life by becoming an author! He also spoke of humility, how he acknowledged that Gill had been better at acting than him, and that he was grateful for what he did achieve, rather than be hard-stuck on what he did not achieve. Kian Murray, Year 7A

David Lawrence is a wonderful author that came to Frankston High School to tell us all about the stories of his life from being at a netball game, to being a popular author.  He loves comedy and working with other people to create truly inspiring books.  He collaborated with indigenous people to make a story about this girl who wanted to play AFL and with the help of David Lawrence her dream came true.  David Lawrence is someone to look up to and an inspiration to Australia.  It was wonderful to listen to him overcome his challenges and be who he is today. CBCA Book Week – Dreaming with eyes open

We had an extremely busy week celebrating Book Week last week.  The JRC ran Book Bingo, Book Scavenger Hunt and Book in a jar competitions to celebrate, plus our popular daily lunchtime raffles.  The English Department also ran several activities including Harry Potter Trivia, Kahoots Trivia, movie screening and writing workshop which were well attended.
