ECOMOTION AND PRECIOUS PLASTICS

EcoMotion and Precious Plastics Monash Uni

EcoMotion is about the possibilities we have at BSC in engaging in a better management of our plastic wastes. To help us moving forward, I touched base with Precious Plastics at Monash Uni (https://www.preciousplasticmonash.com/).

They came back to me, in a very enthusiastic way, and offered a 1 hr workshop for some students who would have a keen interest in the matter. They request me to provide details about the students' year level, previous knowledge about plastic and number of students to organise a meeting.

The strategy here is to target students early in their high school journey to build a team of environmental leaders that would carry the values until year 12 and help educating the coming generations.

I believe acting on our sustainability at BSC is of great value and for the last 8 months I've been working here, I have evaluated the potential and the positive outcomes for our school. We must take the first step and engage as a caring community.

If we can set goals and actions this term in preparation of next school year, we will be able to participate to grants and awards such as The 2023 Premier's Sustainability Awards(https://www.sustainability.vic.gov.au/about-us/awards-we-administer/premiers-sustainability-awards).

The Premier's Sustainability Awards recognise and celebrate Victorians who are leading the way to a sustainable future. The entries close on Sunday 30th of May at 5:00 pm AEDT. The six award categories represent exceptional sustainability outcomes that can be delivered by projects and initiatives, and link to the globally accepted United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.

For us to enter, we will need to collect data and develop this collaboration with Precious Plastics Monash Uni, asap!

So far, with the help of some teachers and students, and the science department, we have collected 30kg of soft plastics in 80 EcoBricks. It's only the beginning of a way bigger adventure!

With the help of Travis Dangstorp, Barbara Hollens, Karen Boyd and Joseph Remman, I’d like to propose a collection of the soft plastic, during the Pick Up Duty in a bin that Joseph would provide us.  I’ve discussed with Karen the option for the Library to be a central drop off point. The East building will also be a collecting point.

Then with the help of students we will fill the EcoBottles, that I have been collected since the beginning of this year, to transform them into EcoBricks.

These could be already used to build the frame of a new veggie patch, meaningful temporary art pieces designed by the students, furniture for the school apart from what we could develop and design with Precious Plastics. They already mentioned they were currently exploring new ways of making furniture when I shared my vision about the project. We shouldn't wait too long and miss this chance.

But, for this dream to come true, I need help from all faculties and students. We are talking about education and action here!

I know we can do great and develop multidisciplinary school projects around the theme, involving science, art, humanities, technology and more. The sky is our limit!

Students and Teachers that would be interested in being part of this project, please send me your expression of interest: bru@brightonsc.vic.gov.au

We can start small and grow bigger!
