Year 6 Science Incursion

Y6 Mad About Science Incursion

Gabriella:

On Wednesday, we had a science incursion about the different states of matter. We talked about sublimation, which is solid going straight into gas and how only some things go through the sublimation process.

We also did some experiments like finding out what gas dry ice is made out of, we figured out that it is made of carbon dioxide which puts out fires.

We also did an experiment where we put dry ice, hot water, food dye and detergent in a big beaker and we got to touch the bubbles that came out of the beaker.

Close to the end of the incursion, we got dry ice and water mixed and it made bubbles we got to hold.

I think everyone enjoyed it and it was really fun!

Henry:

We had a science incursion… and it was amazing!  We got to experiment with different forms of matter and learn new things about them. We turned liquids and solids into gases and other cool stuff.

The main event though was when we got a long plastic vile that the teachers put warm water into. The students got to put some food dye and soap into it as well.

It did get messy to say the least, but then the science teacher came over with a special esky looking thing and dropped a few small pieces of dry ice into the vial and instantly a really cold gas started coming out the vial. It also made bubbles that when popped made an amazing effect.

We also did it with a candle to figure out that the gas produced is actually carbon dioxide. We also did an experiment with baking powder and vinegar, to make tiny volcanoes. That also produces carbon dioxide. Then we got to hold bubbles made of gas at the very end.

It was amazing!

Sophie:

On Wednesday the Year 6s had an Incursion run by Mad About Science where we learnt about the different states of Matter and did some really fun experiments.

My favourite experiment was about sublimation (when a solid becomes a gas). Our groups had a flask with hot water in it, we added food dye and washing-up liquid then Olivia from Mad About Science added dry ice. Then it bubbled up and came out of the top and we could touch the bubbles - they popped when we touched them.

We finished off with an experiment where Oliva made a safe DIY fire extinguisher that produced bubbles and everyone got to hold a bubble.

It was great to learn about Science and the different states of Matter.
