On Friday 11 November, Remembrance Day Services were held across the College to acknowledge those who gave their lives in conflict. This service, as held around Australia on this day, has a history relating to the Armistice commencing in November, 1918, which led to the end of the First World War.
The month of November is also, traditionally, a time of remembrance when Catholics honour and pray for relatives and friends who are no longer with us. At the beginning of November, we recognise the Feast Days of All Saints and All Souls (1 and 2 November respectively). On All Saints Day, we are reminded of those who have led inspirational lives for the service of others and who are exemplars for us, such as St John Baptiste De La Salle and St Mary MacKillop. On All Souls Day, we remember those who have been close to us in life, and have now passed away.
Our Year 9 and 10 students are currently completing their final pieces of work, and will soon be welcomed at the Mentone Campus for the Flying Start Program. We wish them all the very best through this next stage of their education, and thank them for their contributions to the Bentleigh East Campus during their time here. Thank you to Year 10 Coordinator, Mr Mark Micallef, and Year 9 Coordinator, Mr Paul Riley, and the Year 9 and 10 teachers who have worked closely with Mentone Staff in preparation for this transition.
During the first weeks of November, each Year 8 Homeroom has spent some time at Cypress Lodge, St Bede's College Phillip Island Campus. The students were involved in many adventure type activities, and different water-based experiences such as kayaking and surfing. Thank you to our College Outdoor Education Staff - Mr Darren Strom and Mr Hamilton Nesci - and to Ms Rachel Urquhart, the Homeroom Teachers, and Learning Support Officers who accompanied the students on these camps.
Congratulations to those junior students involved in the recent performances of The Trial of The Big Bad Wolf. This was a wonderful joint venture together with students from OLSH. Over the years, this collaboration between the schools has produced many entertaining productions involving our younger students. Thank you to the OLSH Staff who produced and hosted this production, resuming after a hiatus due to Covid restrictions over the last two years.
Recently, Mr Joshua Romeo organised a very entertaining Music Legends Evening during which our talented students to present a selection of songs and pieces for an audience of families, students and Staff. Congratulations to the music students and Staff for their work in preparation for, and their performances on, the night.
I would like to thank the many Bentleigh East students who have represented the College through participation in ACC sports teams during Term 4. Together with their Coaches, they have enjoyed the challenges presented, stepped-up when required, and have experienced pleasing levels of success – well done!
Our Year 9 and 10 Cricket students made it through to semi-finals, in which they played St Bernard’s, Essendon. In a rain affected game, the match resulted in a draw, however a section-placing of 2nd meant the St Bede's team did not, unfortunately, make it through to the final play-off. Congratulations to all involved during this years' ACC Cricket campaign.
