Early Years Sports Carnivals

Last week the 4-year-old Kindergarten, Prep, and Year 1 and 2 students, participated in a fun and interactive Early Years sports carnival. The carnival activities were planned by, and facilitated by, our Year 6 students.

The Year 1 and 2 students had their carnival on Tuesday morning (8 November), which was hosted by students from 6CF, and the Kinder and Prep students had their carnival on Wednesday morning (9 November), hosted by students in 6B.

The carnivals featured 10 different activities that focused on various fundamental movement skills (FMS) – FMS are the building blocks that provide a foundation on which students can participate more broadly in sports, games, and activities as they progress through life. For example, the overarm throw is a fundamental movement skill, and learning how to undertake this skill allows students to access a range of activities that involve the overarm throw. Consequently, without any practical knowledge of this skill, students would find participating in throwing games difficult.

There was a wide variety of activities that covered dodging and running (tiggy style games), AFL ball kicking, throwing, balancing and leaping (obstacle course), ball bouncing, catching and throwing.

The Year 6 students were magnificent in the way that they interacted with the younger children and the younger children had a marvelous time rotating through the variety of activities. Each child visited between 5 to 7 activities during their carnival.

An additional bonus was that family visitors were warmly welcomed and across the two carnivals we had around 50 visitors in total.

Bailey C - Golf

I mentioned in a newsletter article some weeks ago that our year three student, Bailey C, had participated in the division golf tournament for his age group and had successfully progressed to the next round of golf. last Friday, in wet and windy conditions, Bailey played his round of golf and although he didn't make it through to the subsequent round of golf, he represented himself, and our college, exceptionally well. Bailey informs me that he is now very motivated to participate in this golfing event again in 2023.
