Sports Report

Sarah Byron

A busy start to Term 4 with sport. It is so good to see the students getting out and doing what they love.

GWR Athletics

A team of 35 headed to Ballarat in Term 4 for the GWR Athletics. The weather was against us with a cold windy Ballarat day. The team pushed through the elements to come 7th out of 45 schools. Throughout the day the Place ribbons were aplenty with students making it through to the State Track and Field Competition. Students making it through to the next level are Paige Kissel, Joe Cooper, Jessica Mibus, Isabella Cutchie, Grace Cleaver, Sharnee Hutchison,  Matilda Mason and Emilie Tonissen.

State Athletics

Due to clashes with Year 12 work, only 5 students went down to MSAC to compete at the State Track and Field.  Grace Cleaver came 3rd in the U15 girls Hurdles, Jessica Mibus 7th in U14 Discus, Sharnee Hutchison 6th U15 400m, Matilda Mason 6th U14 1500m, U15 4x100m relay; Grace Cleaver, Sharnee Hutchison, Matilda Mason and Emilie Tonissen came 6th.

Year 7/8 Cricket

Unfortunately due to the ongoing bad weather with torrential rain and flooding, the Year7/8 cricket was postponed to a date later in Term 4. The weather once again was against us and the grounds at Pedrina Park were unplayable so the competition was cancelled for 2022.

Year 9/10 Cricket

On Tuesday the 18th October, Monivae sent 3 teams to contest the Year 9/10 Super cricket. Monivae had 1 girls' team and 2 boys' teams. The conditions were very testing due to the previous wet conditions, but we were able to take to the field and play some fantastic cricket. In a super 8's style game, each student playing had to bat, bowl and field for each game. The girls had a very successful day, being led by coaches Molly O'Brien and Jasmine McIntyre. Monivae defeated Bayview 1, Baimbridge, Bayview 2 and then ended up winning the Grand Final match against Bayview 2 at the end of the day. Emilie Tonissen, Caitlin Urquhart, Ella Sevior, and Sophie Taylor had a great day at the crease. They contributed very well to our run tally. Tana Nedziwe, Hayley Cumming, Mimi Chum, Hannah Paine and Tessa Kelly all demonstrated persistence in the field and also when tasked with bowling and wicket keeping duties. The boys' teams faced Baimbridge, Hamilton College, Bayview and Good Shepherd. Despite some very close games, the boys were unable to make the finals. Nic Casey, Bailey Walsh, Noah Cameron, Bailey Cooper and Kyan Evans were charged with coaching the teams and assisting with tactical strategies. Josh Grant, Archie Hintum, Lachie Phillips, Charlie Field, Ed McShane and Campbell Glazebrook all wielded the bat with enthusiasm to add many a run to each game tally. Dave Perera, Riley Casey, Tom Kent, Hayden Millard Jack Jennings, Jackson Ellis, Thomas Calvert, Kyle Rhook, Lachy Page, Jack Rhook, Oliver Foster, Hamish Myers, Connor Kamp and Max Jenkinson all had a day out the ball. Both teams worked well to bowl on some very wet ground and make runs when it was a little slippery. Most importantly all 3 teams had a fantastic day with Mr. Johnson being the chief cheerleader for all of our teams.

GD Golf

Heading into the GD Golf we had a very strong team and they were eager to get out on the green. Unfortunately, due to the unfortunate weather pattern of heavy rains in mid-October the Heywood Golf course was impassable, the Competition was called off.

Clay Target

At the start of Term 4 we held our House Shooting Competition on yet another perfect day. The shooters competed in a 25tgt S/B competition.

Hunter Van Someren Yr 8, Charlotte McClure Yr 11, Ruby Lawrence Yr 12 & Alicia Eats Yr 8

Glenelg was the overall winner of the competition, followed by Ffrench, Mitchell and Lonsdale.

We then headed into the Coleraine Field and Game Shoot, this was held at the Tahara Recreation Reserve.  With approximately 150 shooters the competition was tough. Ruby Lawrence took out the High Gun after a nail biting shoot off, her closest competitor only dropping on target, which meant Ruby needed to shoot a clean sweep to win. First in the Junior age group was Hunter Van Someren after some sharp field and game shooting. With Ruby taking our High gun, Charlotte McClure was in a shoot off for 2nd place. She was victorious for the Over 15 girls section. Alicia Eats took out 1st place for the Under 15 girls section. A fantastic day for all.

Our last shoot for the year was the Warrnambool Yr 7-10 Middle years competition held at the Warrnambool Gun Club, Allansford. With the rain coming down and a strong wind off the ocean, the conditions were far from perfect. The team rallied around each other showing great support and sportsmanship.

Winners

High Gun – Angus Kissel

Novice Girls – Tiffany Powell 2nd; Ebony McClure 3rd.

Experienced Girls – Hayley Jellie 2nd

Experienced Boys – Tom Clark 3rd

Most improved -  Lachlan Page 5+

As Captains we have thoroughly enjoyed the people that have made up this team this year. Congratulations to you all, and a special thank you to all involved.

Ruby Lawrence and Ryan Ackerley.

GD Tennis

On Friday 4th November our Monivae tennis players were lucky enough to get a break in the weather to play in the GD competition. The doubles competition was played at the Monivae courts, the singles at the Hamilton Tennis club. Many of our players featured very well making it through to the final in their divisions. In the singles A and B competitions, Julia Flynn, Jenson Moore, Mitchell Munro, Ruby Wardlaw, Lexie Smith, Ryley Munro, and Joshua Robinson all made it through but unfortunately fell at the final hurdle. It was a similar story with our doubles teams with the pairings of Oliver Foster and Campbell Glazebrook along with Ebony McClure and Maddy Dawson making it through to their finals. Other players on the day included Pippi Mellington, Charlie Koch, Ryder Van Someren, Teyah Evans and Ellie Meade. Even with so many players making it through to their finals, Monivae finished third overall by one point to Portland Secondary College with THAC finishing in First place. Thanks to all students for trying their best and to Ms. Shannon and Mr. Kruger for helping on the day.

GWR Basketball Year 7/8

After all four of the Year 7/8 teams won at Divisional level, the Teams continued to train in preparation for the Regional Competition in Ballarat on Friday 28th Ocotber. The Year 7 boys took to the court first up and showed that they were missing a few tall players however their skill on the court and under the ring certainly made up for it. After a couple of losses, the boys headed into the finals, playing off for 3rd & 4th place. Once again they took to the courts determined to get 3rd place, and in this they were successful.

Our Year 7 girls worked hard all day against some strong competition. They also played for 3rd/4th place. After a tough final game they came away with 4th place. The Year 8 girls were very strong throughout the day and proved that they could match the stronger sides. They went into the grand final as the underdogs and matched the opposition goal for goal. Unfortunately, they weren’t quite able to hold off their opponents to take the win, subsequently coming home with 2nd place.

The Year 8 boys were a force to be reckoned with and showed the competition that they were there to win. Winning all their games the boys went in as underdogs against Brauer College, Warrnambool. The boys started strongly and gained the early lead. Heading into the 2nd half the boys held onto their lead coming home the victors. This meant a trip to Melbourne for State Championships.

State Basketball

An early game scheduled for Monday morning meant the Team headed to Melbourne Sunday afternoon. After detouring to Horsham to pick up most of the team, given they had been representing Hamilton at the Horsham Tournament, we arrived late in Melbourne. We went to this Competition unaware of what to expect. Our first game was against Berwick Secondary College and it was certainly an eye opener for the boys. Given that we were heading into the Championships with some injuries from the weekend, we were unable to hit the boards as well as we usually do.  The boys started well however Lavalla were too strong in the end. The 2nd game was against Sacred Heart College, Kyneton, with the boys up at half time by 3 points so it was looking promising. However it wasn’t to be and we lost 39 -25. Heading into our 3rd and final game, fatigued and soreness starting to take over, Lavalla came home with the win.  The Competition was very tough, however the boys can be very proud of their efforts. Thankyou to Nathan Ough for coaching.
