CAS in action

Through action, students become transformed. They learn more about themselves and about other people and, as a result, become more able to consider how they can contribute to their world in positive and authentic ways. Creativity Activity Service (CAS) is a core element of the IB Diploma Programme where students engage in a range of experiences that challenge them to grow holistically through creative pursuits, physical activity and service to their community.

Whilst our Year 11 students have had to modify or postpone their CAS plans, they have still found ways to engage in a range of meaningful activities within school and in the broader community.

Brandon Collins, Owen Ranby and James Boetto have introduced the game of chess to our Junior School students with the launch of the inaugural JS Chess Club which started in March this year. These students spend one lunchtime each week with students from all year groups to observe students as they play chess and guide them through the rules and possible moves they can make to improve their game. Around 15 – 20 students of all ages participate in each session with our chess experts creating a fun environment to develop strategic thinking and fair play. With Brandon our College Chess Champion and Owen the runner up, our Junior School students are no doubt learning wonderful tip for effective strategy!

Hugh Wright, Will MCready, Daniel Tilahun and Toby Humble have dedicated their Saturday mornings each week to serve at the Wagga Blood Bank. Their key role is to reassure the generous blood donors and offer support to ensure they recover quickly and feel well before heading off. The offer of recovery snacks like delicious milkshakes certainly lifts the spirits, as well as a reassuring chat and the gratitude they express to each donor.

Reflections from all of our Year 11 CAS students certainly reveals the sense of joy, perspective and purpose that comes from the act of giving. An encouragement for all of us!
