HEAD OF JUNIOR SCHOOL

It has been an incredibly busy start to the term in the Junior School with the Little TRACers Readiness program, Semester 2 Agriculture, musical performances, Tournament of Minds, Wakakirri, interest groups, enrolment interviews and 100 Days of Kindergarten celebrations. Whilst visiting our dynamic learning spaces across the Junior School, I have observed many students actively inquire, continually build on their understanding of the world and take responsibility for their learning. Our learners are shifting from compliant students to cognitively engaged learners. This growth is certainly worth celebrating with your child.

Tournament of Minds

The Junior School is excited to be participating in the Tournament of Minds in 2021!

We had a lot of interest and have entered three teams - The Eliminators, Moonwalkers and Tremendous Tigers - who meet on Fridays at second break and after school. Mrs Green and Mr King had to make the hard decision of choosing teams amongst some very talented students.

The Eliminators and Tremendous Tigers are completing the Language Literature challenge, advertising and creating hype for a new version of a classic story, while the Moonwalkers are completing the Social Sciences challenge - they will be interviewing significant people from history to get their thoughts on a current issue of global importance. We are looking forward to seeing what their minds can do!

Congratulations to our 2021Junior School TOM Teams:

  • Tremendous Tigers - Language/Literature: Mackenzie Lister, Harlem Rose, Katelyn Miller, Jack Sheargold, Emily Taylor, Chenxi Zhu, Fletcher Rudd
  • Moonwalkers - Social Sciences/History: Georgina Brimson, Hamish Harding , Patrick Dunstan, Resandhu Hathurusinghe, Alexander Minehan, Hazel John and Lincoln Rudd
  • The Eliminators - Language/Literature: Sofia Chacon, Olivia Peel, Eva Petts,  Alexa Alchin, William Garnock, Jack Arentz and Stuti Sapkota

Wakakirri

Due to COVID 19, Wakakirri has been rescheduled to October. The venue and date are yet to be released; however, once the dates have been confirmed, Ms Addison and Miss MacDiarmid will notify our parents. Our schedule and timeline for rehearsals will remain the same. At the commencement of Term 4, all dancers will be required to attend an additional rehearsal in preparation for the live show. Details of this rehearsal time will be emailed to families closer to Term 4.

Partnerships-Science Faculty

On August 3, the Year 5 Animal Planet Interest Group enthusiastically planted a variety of trees and grasses in the STEM indigenous garden. This was part of the Planet Ark National Tree Day and plants were provided by Wagga Wagga City Council as a part of their sustainability program. The students learnt about the importance of these plants for providing habitats and food for insects, birds and even the local squirrel glider which is a threatened species.

The students did a fabulous job and the College environment will benefit now and in years to come. Thank you to Mrs Bromley for coordinating this fantastic program.

Book Week

All the K-6 classes will be engaging in a variety of activities in the lead up to Book Week. The first activity was a deconstruction of Shaun Tan’s beautiful poster showcasing the theme Old Worlds, New Worlds, Other Worlds. After completing that activity, the students had the opportunity to design their own posters and enter them in our inaugural Book Week Poster Competition. Connecting with the Olympics theme, gold, silver and bronze medal winners were chosen at each of the 4 stages and they will be presented with their certificates and book prizes during our Friday Assembly. Thank you to Ms McAleer for coordinating the Book Week program.

Stanley House day will coincide with our Book Week celebrations by providing our students with more activities to participate in.

I look forward to another exciting fortnight of learning.
