Selamat siang!

It was back to our all too familiar Zoom sessions this week again, something we know the students are becoming experts in - logging on, checking in and engaging throughout each morning. The resilience, commitment and enthusiasm is not lost on our wonderful students and we are so appreciative of their hard work, concentration and willingness to respond to all the various learning tasks and instructions put to them.

Last week, there were opportunities for students to be challenged in their learning across a range of subjects. In Speaking and Listening, students, with all their preparation and research completed, conducted their debates online as you may have seen in Mrs Streitberger’s Assembly video. Students were put into groups, and given a particular topic and side to argue, and together with their group members decided on an order of speakers, with each respective speaker performing a different role. Roles differentiated from introducing the team and the team’s argument and providing evidence, facts and reasons to rebutting opposition speakers to summarising the groups arguments.

An important part of the debates was for the students to practice thinking and writing rebuttal ideas on the spot in preparation for the speech they were about to present. Students were also tasked to provide feedback on a class member's speech on Seesaw, using the feedback sentence starters. We look forward to students continuing their Public Speaking skills through another round of debates when we are back at school face to face.

Additionally, in this area, students also got the opportunity to choose a podcast to listen to from the Student Leadership News Podcast. Podcasts topics included Being Organised, Mental Health and Wellbeing ideas, Making Decisions as a Leader and Planning for the Legacy you want to leave behind. Once students had listened to their chosen podcast, they were to complete a thinking routine to record the connections and thoughts they had gained from their podcast.

The main focus in Mathematics last week was working through a range of area and perimeter equations using a variety of strategies and shapes. Students have been learning and practising applying the area and perimeter formulas to build their fluency when calculating equations and to come up with new strategies when calculating the area and perimeter of irregular shapes.

Additionally, Mrs Brisbane’s passion for sport and the Olympics couldn’t escape our students minds, so students were given a range of Olympics based maths challenges to research and solve and we are sure students learned a range of new knowledge when researching these Olympics style questions.

Students have continued to complete a range of different activities from the choice board made available to them as well. The 5/6 teachers are continually impressed at the commitment showed with these tasks by all students and we hope that these activities are fun, engaging and they are learning something new each time. Keep the posts on Seesaw coming!

  • Jude O - I really like it because gives high profile athletes the chance to show off their skills like in Skateboarding. I have enjoyed watching it because I like all types of sport but my favourite so far to watch is the basketball.
