Auslan Update

Throughout first semester in Auslan classes, students have been growing their signed vocabulary through a range of cooperative and communicative learning activities.

In Weeks 5 & 6, every student across the entire school (unless absent) gave a signed presentation in their Auslan class. Presenting in front of peers can be nerve-wracking for many students at the best of times, let alone in a language that is not their primary language. How fabulous it was to see that every child rose to the challenge and was able to independently demonstrate their signing skills to an audience. I was rather proud to observe the growth in vocabulary retention, hand-shape accuracy and fluency.

Our talented Preps introduced themselves to the class, without the use of voice and demonstrated their understanding of signed letters and numbers. The clever Grade 1 students gave a presentation about a family member, showcasing their family, animal and colour vocabulary. The fabulous Year 2 – 6 students presented their perspectives and preferences about school (with increasing difficulty), including appropriate facial expression and at times even audience participation.  Well done to all our happy signers!

Help! Help! Help!

The sustainability and gardening teams are looking for some donations for a few items they need to create exciting things in the garden.

  • Gumboots….we still need lots of gumboots please!
  • Large pre-loved plastic pots (diameter approx 30cm)

Please bring them to Mr.Flintoff’s room!

Thanks again for your support of the children.

PE and Sports News!

Welcome back to term 3, it was so nice to see everyone again after the break last week, I am looking forward to hopefully a big term 3 of PE and sport.

Division Cross Country

Congratulations to all of the students that attended the Division Cross Country on the last day of term 2, it was a beautiful sunny day to enjoy some personal bests and cheer each other on.  Congratulations to Lachlan Gee in year 4 that came 5th in his race and will be representing St James at the Regional Cross Country which will hopefully go ahead on the 28th or 30th of July (depending on what happens in the coming week).

Stars of the Week

I will be utilising the PE board just next to the community centre more this term! Already you can find nutrition information, what we are doing during the term and the students will be no doubt heading there to check the teams they have made for Gala Days etc :)  We also have a Wall of Fame (or my stars of the week) where students' names (now that I finally know everyone)  will be up found for trying their best, being engaged in sessions and showing great sportsmanship just to name a few of the criteria! Here is week 1's names!

Well done everyone!
