Mathematics Tips During Remote Learning!

As we enter Remote Learning 5.0 I encourage all families to reflect on how they have found teaching and learning mathematics at home. This can be challenging, however it can also be very rewarding. Here are some helpful tips to make the most of the opportunity.

  1. Start with a positive mindset -  Positivity can go a long way to improving student's attitude towards maths!
  2. Embrace the struggle - You may wish to jump in to help your child who is having problems with a task, but it’s normal for students to struggle at first with some concepts. Give them some time to think and try different strategies.
  3. Calculators are not always cheating - Remember - calculators can be a fantastic tool to support learning. Often the use of calculators helps children grasp the Learning Intention and Success Criteria.
  4. Read the Learning Intention and Success Criteria - These help to outline what the aim of the lesson is.
  5. Encourage your child to show you how they worked out a maths problem - For example, you could ask your child, ‘How did you figure that out?’ or ‘Is there another way to figure this out?’ And you could both do the same maths problem and compare how you worked out the answer.
  6. Ask for Assistance -  It is OK if your child finds a task hard. Be there to lend support and of course the teachers is only an email away.                                                                                                                                                                                                                           Good luck with everything and as always, don't hesitate to ask for assitance.

Premiers' Reading Challenge 2021

The Victorian Premiers’ Reading Challenge is now open and St. James School is excited to be participating.

The Challenge is open to all Victorian children from birth to Year 10 in recognition of the importance of reading for literacy development. It is not a competition; but a personal challenge for children to read a set number of books by 17th September 2021.  We ask that you have all of your books recorded by Friday 10th September so that they may be verified in time for the closing date.

Children from Prep to Year 2 are encouraged to read or ‘experience’ 30 books (with 20 or more being from the Challenge list) with their parents and teachers. Children from Year 3 to Year 10 are challenged to read 15 books (with 10 or more being from the Challenge list).

All children who meet the Challenge will receive a certificate of achievement signed by the Victorian Premier and former Premiers.

To read the Premier’s message, view the booklists and for more information about the Victorian Premiers’ Reading Challenge, visit: www.education.vic.gov.au/prc

Your child’s teacher has/will provide your child with their log in details.  Go to this link  Student Log In to access all resources that you will need.  Follow this pathway - School Log In followed by  VPRC Log In.  Remember to continue to record the great books that you have read, and of course, have fun!
