Welcome back to term after a very well-deserved holiday break. Staff and students worked tirelessly to complete semester one and the mid-year break was needed to recharge the batteries for term three. I am excited to play my role as Acting Principal this term. I thank Ms Satilmis for doing a tremendous job in term two as we all adapted to an adjusted leadership structure. The good news is that Ms Karvouni will return in term four to continue her fantastic work.
Our present situation is that remote learning is with us again. The separation from normal schooling is not ideal, despite these challenges, I am confident our wonderful school community can join together and support each other. Each student has the opportunity to engage in a rigorous online program. VCE students have a defined and obvious purpose of completing Unit 2 and/or Unit 4 study; middle years students can engage in building enquiry skills and self-regulation; and the Year 7 and 8 students can work hard on fundamentals of reading, writing, numeracy, and self-discipline that will assist them when we return to campus.
The term got off to a flying start for our Year 11 and 12 students, with some fantastic sessions that focused on personal data reflection, goal setting and forming good habits and the senior students took an adult approach to preparing for the important semester ahead.
Auburn High also hosted parents onsite for the first time in over a year, for the VCE Expo. Year 9 and 10 students and their parents were presented with essential information regarding subject selection and vital VCE terminology. Current senior students were a very impressive presence as they gave parents and students valuable insights. 2022 subject selection will be an ongoing focus for Year 9 and 10 students with our support including: seminars, counselling sessions, ongoing career/pathway support.
We welcomed the launch of the Auburn PADSIP (Positive Ageing Digital Storytelling Intergenerational Project). This incredible project involves Year 9 students meeting and forming working relationships with older local citizens. The purpose of the project is for students and their mentor to create an audio-visual presentation telling a story related to their lives. Many thanks to Mr McPherson for his coordination and advocacy of this program since 2006.
Unfortunately, the highly anticipated Year 8 camp in Alexandra has been postponed due to lockdown. Please stay tuned for updates and hopefully it won’t be long before students will engage in a plethora of physically and socially challenging outdoor activities.
