Spotlight on Learning

Stage 1

1L has had a wonderful term of learning! In the past two weeks, students have been exploring persuasive texts in English and 2D shapes in mathematics.

After reading the picture book, 'Don't Let the Pigeon Drive the Bus!', students participated in a drama and debating activity called conscience alley. We had two opposing teams: for or against the pigeon driving the bus. A student pretended to be the pigeon from the book and moved through the 'alley' to listen to everyone's persuasive reasons. The student heard many creative and strong responses but decided that the pigeon must never drive the bus!

Also in English, students had lots of fun creating a comic strip to convince their parents to buy them a new pet. 1L used the success criteria of punctuation, strong words and different reasons to be very persuasive.

In mathematics, students worked with a partner to create different polygons using paddle pop sticks. Student thinking was challenged as they learnt that any shape with five sides was still called a pentagon, any shape with six sides was still called a hexagon and so on. By the end of the lesson, 1L were able to create regular and irregular polygons.

We are looking forward to the upcoming holidays and excited for another term in Year 1!

Stage 2 Learning Journeys

Stage 2 students are enhancing their self-directed learning abilities by becoming more proficient in setting and pursuing their own learning objectives. In the beginning of Term 1, teachers supported students in establishing their individual English and Mathematics goals. They have diligently collected evidence of their progress and reflected upon their learning experiences thus far. We have included a few examples of these learning journeys and encourage you to review your child's journey and engage them in a discussion about their progress.

Stage 2 Mandarin

Welcome to a snapshot of Stage 2 Mandarin students. We are thrilled to share that Cram.com and Kahoot games have helped our students unlock the power of Mandarin while making their learning journey more enjoyable! Our students have found learning Mandarin through these platforms to be highly engaging and exciting.

At Cram.com, we've created custom flashcards and quizzes, which provide a personalised learning experience for our students. The flexibility to learn at their own pace has helped them build a strong foundation in Mandarin vocabulary and grammar, boosting their confidence in speaking and writing the language.

Moreover, we've integrated Kahoot games into our lessons, making Mandarin an exciting and interactive experience. These games not only reinforce what students have learned in class but also challenge them to master the language, leading to better retention of information and increased language skills.

Thanks to these innovative tools, our students are more engaged, motivated, and excited to learn Mandarin. We're proud to offer these resources to our students and look forward to their continued success in their Mandarin language learning journey.

Stage 3

Throughout this term, Stage 3 students have explored the art of storytelling. Our students were encouraged to unleash their creativity through imaginative and captivating narratives. We have been working on developing a range of writing skills, including characterisation, setting, plot, dialogue, and descriptive language.

Students have been working on various narrative writing tasks, including short stories, descriptive writing, and character profiles. They have been challenged to think outside the box and come up with unique ideas that captivate the reader's attention. We are proud of the progress Stage 3 students have made in their narrative writing skills. Their dedication and hard work developed some outstanding pieces of writing that showcase their creativity and imagination. Many students were able to achieve their learning goals as a result of this.
