St. John's Writing Focus (Lisa Burman Visit next week)

This year the children and educators at St John’s are in the privileged position to work with Lisa Burman, a pedagogical coach in Writing, to learn new strategies to teach and explore writing concepts through a Discovery lens.

Next week Lisa will visit St John’s to meet and work with all the children and educators. She will spend time with the Hubs to teach a writing lesson. Lisa will then work with the educators to discuss the lesson she taught, using her writing approach, and support educators with planning future writing lessons.

On Monday 1st May, she will be visiting the Prep, One and Two Hubs and will model the writing approach of Book Making. In this approach children will be taught a writing concept, for example planning a story, in a  mini lesson (10 minutes). Children will then have time to independently practise this skill by making their own books on any topic or genre they would like to explore.

On Tuesday 2nd May, Lisa will spend time with the Three, Four and Five/Six Hubs to model Writer’s Notebook strategies. Each child in the Grade 3-6 Hub’s have their own journal (“Writer’s Notebook”) that they use as a place to record story ideas, words that they love and examples of writing concepts such as adverbs, adjectives, metaphors. Lisa will spend time with the children in the 3-6 Hubs to use these Writer’s Notebooks to create a text based on one of the ideas they have previously recorded in their own Writer’s Notebook.

Lisa will visit St John’s again in Term 3 to continue to develop educators’ practice and understanding of her pedagogical approach to writing.

We are very excited for Lisa’s visit, and will keep you updated on Social Media with her time at St John’s.

ANZAC day

On Wednesday morning we held a Liturgy to commemorate the Australians who have served our country. We took time to remember the brave men and women who have served our country in times of war and conflict.

On ANZAC day, we remember and give thanks to these people who have fought for the safety and wellbeing of our country. We especially take time to remember and acknowledge the lives lost in the pursuit of peace and harmony.

Thank you to the families who attended and to the children who were calm and respectful during the service.

God of love and liberty,

We bring our thanks this day for the peace and security we enjoy, which was won for us through the courage and devotion of those who gave their lives in time of war. We pray that their labour and sacrifice may not be in vain, but that their spirit may live on in us and in generations to come. That the liberty, truth and justice which they sought to preserve may be seen and known in all the nations upon earth. This we pray in the name of the one who gave his life for the sake of the world, Jesus Christ our Lord.

Amen

Hello families!

Last term I sold playdough $1 each.

I have currently raised $67.30. I will be donating the money to a company named Backpack Bed for Homeless. The company gifts homeless people beds and sleeping bags. I am hoping to raise enough money for two sleeping bags.

I learnt a lot from this project. I learnt about measurements. I learnt how much is 60ml. I learnt how to be resilient when my playdough did not work and I learnt how to organise my information onto a Canva poster.

I wanted to do this project because I feel bad for the homeless because they don’t get as much food, water and sleep as we do. I will be selling the rest of the playdough on Tuesday 2nd May.
