"World Class" Year 9 student

Congratulations to Year 9 student, Gia K. of 9E, on her outstanding achievement in the recent Nike FC Cup. Gia became the youngest ever player to score a hat trick in the tournament's history!

Outside of school, Gia plays for the Manningham United Blues Football Club and, despite being a junior player, Gia was permitted to play in the Senior team and represent her club at the Nike FC Cup. Senior Women’s Head Coach, Paul McCarthy, described one of Gia's goals as "world class".

Football Victoria has written a great article about Gia, which you can read here:

Math Enrichment Games

The first event in a series of three Math Enrichment Competitions was held on the 30th March, and all SEAL/Extension classes were encouraged to participate. Students sat the Kangourou Sans Frontieres online test in the Senior Centre.

What is the Kangourou Sans Frontieres?
In 1991, two French teachers inspired by the Australian Maths Competition, decided to start a similar competition in France. They called it the 'Kangaroo' to pay tribute to their Australian friends. Now known as the Kangourou sans Frontieres, or Kangaroo without Borders, it is one of the largest mathematics competitions in the world with more than 6 million participants each year. In Australia, the Kangourou sans Frontieres (KSF) is a maths competition for students in years 3 to 12.

Over 75 minutes, students answered 30 questions covering topics such as arithmetic, algebra, geometry, statistics and problem-solving.

The next event will be the Computational and Algorithmic Thinking test held on the 2nd - 4th May.

The Environmental Club

The Environmental Club has been very active in our community with a range of different projects. Some of the programs include learning and making tote bags, organising a nature scavenger hunt for year 7s, and running activities for World Bee Day in term 2. All these projects aim to bring awareness to our environment, reduce our resources going into landfill by reusing and trying to change our habits.

Students have divided themselves into teams, learning new skills while building a sense of community focused on environmental issues. Please have a look through the photos to see students in action.

Year 9 students supporting animal welfare

Our Year 9 MYSELF program offers students a diverse range of authentic and integrated electives, including the Year 9 MYAnimal subject. Year 9 students, Laura D. and Ascari M., have been gathering donations from local businesses, including PetBarn Nunawading, to help an animal shelter. Last week our students were proud to hand over 150kg of dog food to Second Chance Animal Rescue.

Well done Laura and Ascari!
