Stage 3

A message from Stage 3

Welcome to Term 2. Our first week back flew by and was filled with a range of opportunities for our students. This term promises to be a very busy one and will see our students involved in a range of sporting, academic and cultural activities. We welcome Mrs Tabatha Wain to the Stage 3 team. Mrs Wain will be teaching Personal Development and Health lessons to all Stage 3 classes.

Year 6 Leaders

Students in our Year 6 Leadership Team have been very busy over the past term. They have been active in a variety of activities including helping out around the school with the distribution of equipment, leading our daily Acknowledgement of Country, helping with the K-2 Hat Parade, assisting to organise and run sporting events and leading the recent ANZAC Day service at our school. Over the next few weeks they will be helping to run a Mother's Day stall at school, with the proceeds assisting with expenses associated with the Great Aussie Bush Camp. They are proving to be excellent school representatives!

Great Aussie Bush Camp

Student excitement continues to build in the lead up to the Great Aussie Bush Camp to be held next term. Just a reminder that students should have paid their deposit to secure a spot on this excursion. Ongoing payments can be made at any time to the front office or through your child's teacher.

Learning in Term 2

This term all students in Stage 3 will be taking part in an Oracy Project as part of their learning in English. The skills gained in these lessons will assist students to become more confident to express their opinion clearly in front of others. They will build a vocabulary bank which will help them to compose sentences and contribute their ideas during class discussions, important skills for school and later life.

If you would like to know more about what oracy is and why it is a focus for us this term, watch this quick clip which explains the importance of developing oracy skills and why they are so valuable.

In English lessons we will also be studying a text 'Alfred's War'. This text tells the story of a young Australian Indigenous serviceman who returned from the WWI battle lines and explores the lack of recognition given at that time, to Aboriginal service men and women, when they returned from active service.

During our Term 2 History unit, Convicts and Colonial Life, students will examine colonial Australia in the 1800s, including the founding and expansion of the British colonies and why they developed. They also will learn about what life was like for different groups in early colonial times.

URSTRONG

Our PD lessons this term will be focusing on the URSTRONG program which is being implented across the school.  URSTRONG is all about empowering kids with friendship skills

Our initial lessons will focus on:

  • Self-compassion, teaching students how to squash ANTs (Automatic Negative Thoughts) and dispelling myths around gender stereotypes.
  • The ‘truths’ of friendship so they have realistic expectations in their relationships. Students also practise the art of conversation.
  • Identifying the difference between healthy & unhealthy friendships and friendship groups, both in-person and online, and the impact body language has on our friendships.
  • Teaching students, step-by-step, how to resolve conflict with a friend. They learn how to handle a friend’s negative reaction and what to do if the conflict is online.

We look forward to working with you again this term and encourage you to reach out by phone or email if you have concerns about your child.
