Stage 2

A message from Stage 2

Welcome to Term 2! Although we have started with a short week, we have managed to fit a lot of things into just three days! Students participated in our school ANZAC assembly and were finally able to compete in our much anticipated cross country carnival after it was postponed last term.

What's on this term?

This term we look forward to our Street Food Fair where we celebrate the diversity of our student body with a multicultural food festival. We also look forward to, in the coming weeks, the opening of our Yarning Circle and surrounding area at recess. This will give students a quiet space to go at recess to talk with friends or have a space for quiet reflection.

Sadly, we had to say farewell to Miss Moloney at the end of Term 1. However, we are very excited to welcome back Mrs Tabatha Wain. We also welcome a new team member, Miss Annabelle Green. Mrs Wain and Miss Green will be teaching visual arts to our students this term.

There have been some changes to class timetables this term, so please see below for the days and times that students will be participating in library, PE, visual arts, music and ICT.

English

In English, Stage 2 students will continue to apply their knowledge of sentence structure and use the ‘Seven Steps to Writing Success’ model to write narratives as well as persuasive texts. Students will be learning to provide and justify a point of view, elaborate on their ideas and use a range of persuasive techniques. We will be supported by Mrs Kerrie Edmunds who will work in many of our classrooms, sharing her knowledge and expertise in this area.

Mathematics

Stage 2 students will recommence maths groups next week, investigating the properties of special quadrilaterals as well as the concept of symmetry. We will continue to work on developing efficient strategies for addition, subtraction, multiplication and division throughout the term, with other areas of focus to include data, angles, position, fractions and decimals.

MAPPEN - History

This term we will be working through our unit ‘First Contacts’, learning about the ways in which information about the past can be gathered and developing our skills of historical inquiry. Students will pose questions and use a range of sources to investigate the reasons behind European settlement in Australia. We will explore the impact that this had on Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and the country, focusing on different perspectives.

PE

We will continue to have sport on Mondays, where, in rotational groups, we will continue to focus on developing gross motor skills to play modified games.

Stage 2 Camp

As part of our study in Geography and PDHPE, Stage 2 will be participating in an overnight excursion to engage in fieldwork activities in Coffs Harbour. This will occur in Term 3 Week 2. Students will attend in two groups. Group 1 will depart on Wednesday 26 July and return Thursday 27 July, while Group 2 departs on Thursday 27 July and returns Friday 28 July.

During the excursion, students will participate in an activity at Dorrigo National Park - ‘Sensing the Rainforest’, attend Treetops Adventure at Coffs Harbour, and visit the Dolphin Marine Conservation Park, also in Coffs Harbour.

Students will travel by bus and stay at the Coffs Harbour Adventure Centre, with most food provided. The cost is estimated to be around $160 per student, depending on student numbers.

An expression of interest has been sent home to gain an understanding of the number of families who would like their child to attend the excursion. Please return the note by Wednesday 3 May so we can start confirming details and numbers with venues. The students are very excited about this camp and we look forward to getting to know your child outside of the school setting.

Cross Country

A huge congratulations to all students who participated in the cross country on Thursday. We know how excited everyone has been to participate, and it was wonderful to see so many people dressed in their house colours. It was a lovely day, despite the cold, and it was great to see our students having fun and trying their hardest.
