Stage 1

A message from Stage 1

The Stage 1 teachers have loved seeing everyone's smiling faces return to school for Term 2. We have many exciting things planned this term, including a visit to Thalgarrah in Weeks 3-5 as part of our Integrated Studies unit. Permission notes went home last week. Please remember to pack a labelled school jumper and extra food in your child's lunchbox. As the weather cools down, we find that students eat most of their food before the lunch break. We are looking forward to an exciting Term 2!

English

This term we are learning to identify and structure an informative text. We will be learning the difference between fact and opinion and each class will be researching their class animal. We are learning to accurately write factual simple and compound sentences and use carefully chosen adjectives to describe nouns in our writing.

Mathematics

We are learning to:

  • recognise, recall and record combinations of 2 numbers that add up or bond to form 10 or 20
  • recognise and use the symbols for plus (+), minus (–) and equals (=)
  • describe combinations for numbers using words such as more thanless than and double

We will know we are successful when we:

  • can automatically recall number bonds to 10 and 20
  • can use this knowledge to record combinations of numbers that add to numbers from 11 up to and including numbers beyond 20
  • know that adding to numbers makes them bigger
  • know that subtracting from numbers makes them smaller

Integrated Studies

This term we are learning to make predictions during experiments and describe what will happen when materials are mixed together. To test our predictions, we are learning to observe what happens during experiments and discuss their results using scientific language. Rumour has it there will be some volcanoes, explosions and lots of mess!
