Principal's Message

Dear Parents/Carers,

ANZAC CEREMONIES

This week we commemorated ANZAC Day at school with our own ceremony in place of our regular Monday assembly.

It was led by our student leaders who practised their roles during the school holidays.

We are very fortunate to have capable and confident leaders such as Jagger, Noah, Brianna and Freya.

It was also our good fortune to have a special guest Ken Cumming, who served in Vietnam. Ken mentioned that it had been 55 years since he returned from Vietnam and felt very fortunate to have served and continued to serve our country. Ken relayed the story of a young orphan nicknamed ‘Rabbit’ because he was so fast when he ran. The soldiers cared for this young boy who lost both his parents to the war. In 2018 Ken returned to Vietnam and was re-united with ‘Rabbit’ and was delighted to meet his wife, family, children and grandchildren.

Ken will return to Warrnambool Primary School in August to share more about his story with our Year 6 students.

We were also well represented at the Dawn Service and the mid-morning march by our student leaders on Tuesday. Our students proudly recall the sacrifices that those who served and serve have made on our behalf.

WARRNAMBOOL PRIMARY SCHOOL – CHANGE OF LOGO, SCHOOL COLOURS AND UNIFORM

Last year we asked the school community through a survey about what you liked and disliked about the current school uniform. There were varying results which prompted a sub-committee to be created consisting of parent school council members and staff.

After careful consideration it was decided that the school should change its colours and school logo to be more modern and suited to the school.

I’m pleased to announce that from 2024 the school colours will be Navy and Gold and the new school logo is shown below.

This change has been one that has been made with careful consideration including the accessibility of buying uniform items at other retail shops making it more affordable for families.

The new uniform will be phased in with the 2024 Foundation students. All other students are not expected to be in the new uniform next year however it will be available for purchase next year if you wish.

Midford our current uniform provider will continue to supply our uniform requirements with the shop remaining at the school. We are still working out all the details however more information will be provided in due course.

There are still current uniform items available for purchase at a discounted price.

On behalf of the School I would like to thank all those involved in this process and I look forward to seeing these new changes in 2024.

PUPIL FREE DAY - MONDAY 15TH MAY 2023

This is a reminder that School Council passed Monday 15th May 2023 as a dedicated Pupil Free Day for Numeracy Professional Learning.

Children are not required at school on Monday 15th May 2023. Their Care will be offering their program for those families who require the service.

FOUNDATION INFORMATION NIGHT- MONDAY 1ST May 2023 5.30PM

We would love to see as many prospective parents as possible to our Foundation Information Night on Monday 1st May 2023 at 5:30pm in the Infant Gym.

If you already have children at Warrnambool Primary School or if you know someone who has a child about to commence Foundation in 2024 please come along and encourage them to also.

We will share information about the first year of school, a day in the life of a Foundation child at Warrnambool Primary School and outline some of the great programs we have at Warrnambool Primary School.

EDUCATION WEEK MONDAY 15TH - FRIDAY 19TH MAY 2023

Education Week is an annual celebration of education in Victoria. This year Victoria will celebrate Education Week from Monday 15th May to Friday 20th May 2023.

This year’s theme is ‘Active Learners: Move, Make, Motivate’ which celebrates physical activity, hands-on-learning and student voice in education.

As part of the fun we are holding our Open Night on Tuesday 16th May 2023 from 5.30pm. There will be a sausage sizzle run by the WPPA, Lucky Door Prizes and the launch of the Scholastic Book Fair.

The best part of the evening will be to visit your child’s classroom and catch up with the staff and other school community members. The children love seeing their parents and families in their school.

All families and friends are welcome to attend including any prospective new families.

JAMIESON STREET PLATFORM SCHOOL CROSSING

We have a new platform school crossing in Jamieson Street near Nelson Street.

This is not a Wombat Crossing (there is no yellow sign with the feet) so cars only have to give way to people when the School Crossing Flags are out. So pedestrians and riders will be required to wait until the Crossing Supervisor blows their whistle to cross.

All other times it is a normal road, so people walking will have to give way to cars. The platform makes it easier for people with mobility issues to cross as they don’t have to step down onto the road. It also slows the traffic.

FOUNDATION - YEAR 2 CROSS COUNTRY

On Thursday the Foundation to Year 2 students participated in the annual cross country. The rain managed to stay away with the sun shining just at the right time. It was so pleasing to see all the students participating and giving it their best. Thank you to Mrs Owen for once again organising a great event. Congratulations to all the students who placed.

Have a great weekend!
