Humans of Kilvington

Our guest for this week's 'Humans of Kilvington' is our Japanese teacher, Gillian Guyton.

1. When you were younger, what did you want to be when you grew up?

A photographer.

2. What football team do you support?

I used to pretend I supported St Kilda just to have something to banter with my Year 12s about. But then one day when I was standing with a group of my students, Nick Riewoldt walked past and said hello to me. I said hello back, thinking he was a parent. When the kids saw that I had no idea who he was, they realised I wasn’t really into football ...

3. You can travel to any destination in the world, where would you go?

South America, Alaska, Switzerland ... world tour?

4. Funniest/most memorable moment at Kilvington?

Sharing a birthday with Paul de Winter in Japan in 2019. We had dinner at a Japanese restaurant which only served dishes made from rice. Janet Costello ordered him a birthday candle in his rice dessert and sang really loudly (not a common scene at a restaurant in Japan). He was so embarrassed. I loved it.

5. Share something about yourself that no one would ever guess.

Before Kilvington, I used to work at a beauty salon doing eyelash extensions, makeup and spray tans.

6. If you could swap your job with anyone else at Kilvington, who would you swap with?

P.E staff. I always get asked if I teach sport. I’d love to wear activewear to work every day too.

7. Your favourite thing about working at Kilvington?

Five years on and I'm still amazed at how quietly the students sit during assembly. Their behaviour is exceptional.

Thanks Gillian!

Global Connections Opportunities in 2024

Lucie Dickens, Academic Dean of Languages

As we look ahead at possible Global Experiences for our students, we would like to inform you of the options students may have in 2024 to visit and/or host students from our partner schools, including Saint Joseph La Salle in France, and Hiroshima Jogakuin Junior High School, Todoroki High School and Seiyro High School in Japan.

2024 SCHOOL GROUP TOURS

As part of the Kilvington’s Global Connections Program, your child (if studying French or Japanese in Year 10 or 11 in 2024), will have the opportunity to take part in an exciting School Group Tour in 2024 to visit our partner schools either in France or Japan.

At this stage, both trips will be around three weeks in duration. The trip to France is currently scheduled for April (Easter holidays and the first week of Term 2) and the Japan trip possibly in September.

Information nights for our 2024 School Group Tours will take place in Semester Two, 2023.

A reminder that the School Group Tour to France is a reciprocal experience: our families will be asked to host for three weeks in Term 4, 2024.

At this stage, we do not have a trip to China planned for 2024 but will continue to maintain our partnership with West Yan’an Middle School, Shanghai.

INDIVIDUAL TOURS IN 2024 - 2025

Japan

Years 10 and 11 Kilvington students who will be studying Japanese in 2024, can spend three weeks in January 2024, living with a host family in Ogaki or Tokyo, Japan. They will experience Japanese daily life and attend classes at the Seiryo High School in Ogaki or Todoroki High School in Tokyo. These individual tours are not a reciprocal experience.

An Information night for our 2024- 2025 Individual Tours to Japan will take place in Semester Two, 2023.

France

At the end of the 2024 school year, Years 10 and 11 Kilvington students who studied French have the opportunity to spend five weeks in France. This tour to France includes the Christmas holiday period (two weeks) and the first three weeks of the French school term in 2025. Students will attend classes at Saint Joseph La Salle, Toulouse. This is a reciprocal experience and students will host their French student in June/July 2024.
