Elephant Toothpaste Demonstration

On Friday the 25th November students enjoyed a demonstration of elephants toothpaste. Using hydrogen peroxide and potassium iodine a large amount of bubbles can be produced and with a bit of food colouring a very colourful mess can be formed. Three different containers, a small and large conical flask and a large measuring cylinder were used to house the experiment each producing different amount and bubbles in their own way. This experiment, while not explosive does produce a large amount of heat and students followed the safety instructions by staying behind the fence. Well done everyone for your respectful involvement.

Bubbles at lunchtime

On Thursday the 1st of December at lunch, students had some fun with blowing bubbles. Bubbles are a very interesting piece of science and lots of variety of mixtures can be made. The mixture that was used contained 6 cups of water, half a cup of detergent, 1 tablespoon of glycerol and 1 table spoon of baking powder. Students fashioned blowers out of pipe cleaners and/or paper clips with varying designs. Some students took on an extra challenge to make as large of a bubble as they could but blowing bubbles, especially large bubbles was not as easy as it seemed. There were many failures and many successes and a great deal more laughter.

STEM Committee yearly overview

Stem committee started fresh this year with very few members, in fact it was one, Pranay Preeju. We were worried it might not even get off the ground, but with a bit of publicity Matthew Dinh became the second member. Matthew and Pranay helped organise the events at the start of the year and did a marvellous job. After some events and some more publicity STEM Committee grew to a large team. Devasena took over publicity and created some fantastic posters and everyone else continued to work hard. STEM committee was a team effort and everyone who contributed made what was the 2022 STEM committee.

You all have blown us away this year and we look forward to seeing what 2023 will have in store.
