Wonder- BASP

BASP works with some of the most disadvantaged people in our community.

They are individuals and families who have fled their homeland for fear of reprisals. While safe to be out of danger there, they are without family and community support and familiar customs.

They have been left in limbo for many years waiting for the Australian government to fairly assess their applications for protection and to give them some security and certainty in their lives.

Some have health issues which impact on their ability to work; others’ health has deteriorated due to the treatment of the Australian government; many have no income and rely on charities like BASP for their basic needs; others want to work and are refused the right to do so.

So much is stacked against those who came to Australia seeking our help.

We wonder- that is marvel – at how so many keep going, despite the hurdles. The respect they show and the thanks they express for the contact and help they receive is humbling.

We also wonder, again marvel, at the goodwill of so many Australians in opposing the treatment of these vulnerable people in the name of national security by our government.

BASP operates because of the generosity of many of these people- through donations which cover housing, bills and food costs and time to build relationships, reduce isolation and give support.

We also wonder – this time despair- how our Federal government can be so cruel and how the broader community has allowed it ( and previous governments) to behave in this manner.

How can we educate, agitate, arouse awareness to reverse the current treatment of and apathy towards people seeking asylum in Australia? I wonder.
